Multiplayer?

Inferno

Lieutenant Commander
Hi Guys,

Just thought to ask, can FS2 run multiplayer sessions?
Just wondering seeing as the mods coming along so well.
Think the missions are great and models an everything.
Would be cool if online Squadrons were possible and stuff.
Are there still voice acting jobs going?
Well good luck with everything.

Multiplayer will be possible in the future. FS2 supported multiplayer in kind of deathmatch and teamplays/coop as far as I remember. The SCP guys are overworking the code to improve it for mod support like a killboard just for the mod. There where other things but I forgot them.

I don't know what you mean with online Squadrons. You could say that, in a teamplay mission, all your friends are fighting on the same side and you could track your stats via the killboard.

That brings up the idea of haveing tournaments online with a spectator who comments the game as its done with games like Counterstrike or Supreme Commander.
We could see that the tournaments that where mentioned in the WC3 handbook take place from time to time ^_^

Sounds cool
Hows the campaign coming along?
Are the models the same ones shown on the fleet tactics site (don't know if its still about)?
Yeah I was thinking clans and coop matches team deathmatch stuff like that. the results could be used for online campaigning I suppose but that might be too complex. Killboard would be great.
I'm wondering do u get to choose ship or load out like WC3?
Nice to hear from u so soon cheers man

The campaign is comeing along nicely..sometime slow but there is progress.
There is a good number of near finished missions and some finished ones.
Fleettactis showed a good number of ships from different sources but some where from our mod, that is right. When I saw the page the last time some where outdated tought.

A online campaing would be a bit complex I agree on that point.
Mh...thinking about it...the easiest way I could think of out of the box would be something like this.
Its more or less like chess via Email but a bit more complex ^_^
You have two teams. One Kilrathi, one Confed and a "gamemaster". This dude has a map, of a Sector or just a Starsystem, with differe quadrants that could be conquered.
One halfe of the map is confed, the other is Kilrathi and one neutral territory. Thats the startingpoint in the middle of the map. Here the first fight will take place. The winner gets the initative and can select the next target.
The "gamemaster" keeps track of the battles and keeps the map up to date. Game ends when one side controls the map or the other side gives up.

Mission would have to be made prior to this and also the map. It would be quite some work but I think it could be fun.
Missions could be objective based or just getting enough kills.

Territorys could also provide bonuses like adding a fixed numbers of bots to the side holding it or other boni.

You could add more complexity by saying that each side has only a fixed number of ships. If they are lost the game is over. That would mean more work for the gamemaster since each mission would have to reflect that progress. I don't know if it might work but there is a way in FS to let missions take over stats from previouse battles but that only works if the game istn't interrupted in between.

Another thing would be that over a year and with enough players and people to track stats and create missions you could even go so far as to create an entrie war with changeing frontlines.
I doubt that this would ever happen since its a hell of a task to do, except someone would code in some stuff that would create some autotracking for stats and some heavy reuse of missions.

Still its a funny idea to play around with.
What should work is the creating the "Chess by Email" system with just 11 mission/territories.
Well we will see if there are people that will take the time to create something like that. We have to focus on the campaign first.

Well back to your questions ^_^
Personal mission loadout should be in the final release.

Cheers for the reply man.

Was thinking like ARMA online games.
where the mission oblectives change when objectives are met or the next mission played depends on the previous outcome.

eg.

confed controls system Kilrathi attacks.
first game deathmatch at jump point
outcome 1: kilrathi wins confed have to escort and will be assaulted on route
outcome 2:confed wins kilrathi are on run and confed strikes

various other naval type ops like that. could have two player controled teams like team death match with re-enforcments being spawned from killed players till carrier is destroyed and so on.

I go Ideas but not the programming knowledge.

Inside of one mission it will surely be possible to have changeing objectives but over several with maybe not even the same players and a time delay you would need a tracker that keeps the stats. You could do that manual, as discribed above or someone has to program something. Currently I doubt that its possible to have something complex like that.
Deathmatch and coopmission with changeing objectives and stuff shouldn't be a problem.

Still MP will most likely not comming before the final release.

You know you can already take to the stars with people using HCl's WCP Multiplayer patch as well?

He's still working on adding some of the ideas you mentioned but it does have basic deathmatch for up to 8 people.

It is possible to do that. Stats can already be uploaded from the FS2 program (FS2NetD accomplished this). What variables are submitted are entirely dependent on what the mission coders submit in the missions.

From there you would need two things, a tracking database and a front end program to do the work for you. I believe FS2NetD uses MySQL which could be used to store the missions, then it's a simple thing to use ASP or PHP to select the next mission based on the outcome of the previous one. However, all the mission trees would have to be mapped and planned ahead of time, and all the missions created and uploaded.

And you would need the cooperation of the FS2NetD staff to help dissect the code. Additionally, players would have to keep coming back to the "Campaign" site with it's database and code to download the next mission.

It's possible, it's not even very complicated - except for working through the FS2NetD code, which no one wants to do. Allegedly, there is something better in development that will eventually be used with all the FS2 mods.

Interesting. I know that there was something going on about the MP support but I don't know any details since I am not keeping track of the developments in that direction.

I haven't really been keeping track either, but from what I remember, the FS2NetD crowd is reluctant to spur any kind of development.

Apparently, way back when, there were 18 different versions of FS2 floating around and people go so frustrated trying to play together, they stopped and the multi community died. This was about the time the PXO system died.

Some guys got together and started some common net code (FS2NetD) hosted on their server (I think it's Game Warden) and decided that, to prevent the fracturing of the multi community, no one would ever be allowed to develop or change the FS2NetD code, except them. Even for mods. If mods wanted the same security and stat tracking from FS2NetD, it needed to be done through their site, Game Warden.

After a few months of that they decided that since a newer better version of PXO (that's been in development for two or three years) might be coming sometime soon (read that: in the next few years) development on the FS2NetD code was superflous anyway - even though it's unlikely the myriad of mods working with the FS2netD code are going to use the PXO system anyway.

Sounds cool

half of the missions are done, which means that another half is yet to go :)

weapons: of course. You won't be able to select your ship though - you start as a 2nd Lt., which means you are taking orders, not giving them :)

Regarding the voice acting: yes, we could use a few more voice actors :)
