Most memorable wc moment

If I may be allowed to post something from the non-canon, I had a spectacular moment a few months ago while playing Standoff. During the battle of Warsaw I escorted the Broadswords to strike the Ralatha and Snakeir. First strike was by the numbers but the attack on the carrier was insane. Kilrathi fighters swarmed all over us while me and the other Rapiers hugged the Broadswords like glue to keep them safe and our side took horrific casualties, I was badly damaged, and we didn't make it and the order came down to withdraw while you still could so we did.

What struck me though was that the mission seemed pulled straight from the page of Fleet Action where Kevin Tolwyn is charged with defending Broadswords in Sirius.

You know, I have to amend mine-

I remember in WC3 getting insanely pissed at defending the Behemoth all the way to Kilrah to have it be destroyed in an unwinnable mission (I must have replayed that mission like 20 times trying to save it- it still didn't ever sink in that the Behemoth's destruction was scripted!)- Immediately after the mission, I remember thinking "man, why did they have to make the ultimate Kilrah destroying weapon a giant unarmed capship? Why couldn't it be a fighter or something?" And then, a few missions later- the Temblor Bomb is introduced! I almost fell over. I did think it was a great irony after what the Kilrathi did to Blair's reputation in WC2 with the cloak that Kilrah's ultimate destruction was brought about by Blair using Confed's first real stab at using a cloak in combat!

The final confrontation between blair and tolwyn at the end of wc4 and the ensueing court montage, it felt like a true ending to the series much like star trek the undiscovered country. if we could ignore the "i have everything" cheese that followed that would be lovely.

notice no one has said anything about prophecy? HA!

I thinik Prophecy had a few memorable moments... Blair's final showdown, Casey explaining how highly Blair is considered on the Academy, for example.

The giant battle in Prophecy where Dallas meets his end.

Wing Commander Prophecy

I adore the atmosphere of the first mission. It has so many main characters all buzzing around together in that gorgeous asteroid field, and then the Nephilim turn up and they come up as "Unknown". Oh, and you're in the Piranha, my favourite light fighter.

Probably my most memorable Wing Commander (gameplay) moment, was when I was defending the Midway from Skates in one mission. I'd just destroyed a Skate Cluster and was turning for a new target when an enemy torpedo blazed right past my canopy. I immediately turned and afterburned after it, inadvertently coming alongside it, with the bridge of the Midway looming in front of us. With no time to drop back and shoot it, I just reacted out of pure instinct and rammed it side on, destroying the torpedo and my ship.

What got me was this... I didn't think about it, I just snapped the joystick over and took it out, saving the Midway. So, the question is, had that been a real situation, and not a computer game, would I have done the same thing? It got me thinking a lot, hence, my most memorable moment.

So on and so forth...

Being there for the tail end of the tourney. LOAF should be immortalized in WC6 for that. And make him a major so Maniac can bitch. Major Ben "Bandit LOAF" Lesnick. Who agrees?

The losing cutscene where the relentless bug armada destroy a starbase on the Sol System is creepy.

Is that mission even winnable on default difficulty, or do I just really suck at Standoff?

Well, I do have a star system... and I've got a character hidden in Star*Soldier somewhere. I don't think anyone else has spotted me yet...

Yeah, I spotted "Bandit" in there... and i think I saw Lesnick in there somewhere too, but I can't really remember. :)

All cinematics from WC1 blew me away at that time. The sequence from WC2 when the Concordia blasted away the kamekh with the main gun. And the flight to kilrah in wc3, the feeling of beeing alone in enemy territory still exhos in my brain.

WC2: Destroying K'Tithrak Mang - I don't know why this mission was so hard for me; I play it now and I realize how much of a cinch it is, but back when I first played it I'd always get my torpedo track destroyed before getting off the second torp and I'd have to start all over...

SO1: For some reason, the first time I played the last mission (with useless wingmen Hobbes, Bear, and the other guy I can't remember who all eject well before giving you any sort of help) the capships weren't firing anti-matter cannons, but every time after they did, making it one of the toughest missions for me at the time.

WC3: When Angel died I was so upset I had to stop playing for like 2 days; I mean you saw her in peril at the beginning of the game but I always thought Blair'd come in guns blazing and rescue her. The scene with Flint and Rachel was also quite memorable; I played out all the combinations to see yeah - and the losing track in Sol (Eisen: "We'll take as many of them with them as we can - make your peace, Mr. Rollins) and that entire cutscene was unforgettable...

WC4: It's been mentioned before, but the scene where the Intrepid is chasing Tolwyn through Sol "He's right at the jump point...and he's Turning Around??" was spine-chilling to me. Also Vagabond "I'm not firing on the Captain; I'm going with him...you with me?"

WCP: Hawk - "These cats killed your father! Shoot the bastards!"

Although the only WC game I have ever played was WC1 on SNES, when I got the Raptor for the first time I was awestruck at how much firepower it had. Flying that fighter was the best time I have ever had in a video game.

We don't have actually unwinnable missions anywhere in the campaign... everything was beat by someone on the team that didn't use cheats... somehow. :p

We do have nearly-impossible missions, but they're intended to be that way - meaning that we don't punish people too much for losing these (I suck at Standoff too :p).

Also, it's really great to see Standoff mentioned in a "most memorable moments" thread. :)

Chief among the "memorable moments" was trying to play Wing Commander on a 486DX2/66. The game, well, wasn't designed for a 486. I would hit A, see "Dralthi" flash on the VDU, and die. One time I used the nav map to go to a different nav point, saw some asteroids, hit one, watched the VDU go out, hit a couple more, and died. It was many years before I got a copy with SM2 and used the SM2 exe to play the game. Unfortunately I don't have that particular copy anymore and the retail version is flaky under any settings in DOSBox.

On my first playthough of the original campaign using the SM2 exe, Iceman was shot down, and I got to see his funeral. Iceman is my favorite character in the entire WC series. It sucked.

Ripping Prince Thrakath a new one near K'Tithrak Mang. That felt good. The Drakhai Sartha were actually tougher individually than he was.

Then there was the first time I flew the Morningstar. I felt like God in that thing. Three particle cannons, 20cm of armor, a big honking nuke to launch at unsuspecting cap ships. I loved and still love WC2, even if I wish they hadn't thrown out all the old WC1 ships. I miss the Salthi, Dralthi, Gratha, and Raptor in WC2.

More recently, I played Prophecy and Secret Ops for the first time and met the Nephilim, whom I had previously known only through FAQs, sites, and the WC CIC ship section. They were the lamest enemies I've fought in any space sim ever, from their crappy ships to their cliched space-bug theme to the retarded taunts and messages they spew out every three seconds (I AM DESTROOOOYYYYEEEED!). They replaced the kats with this?

I was elated when Wing Commander Saga Prologue gave me a taste of what I will experience when I play a copy of WC3 that works. I tried to play the WC3 demo years ago on a Windows 98 system, but it didn't work, I recently tried to play the Kilrathi Saga version, which stubbornly resisted all attempts to make it work, and now I've ordered an original DOS copy off of Amazon, which will hopefully work when it arrives. (But I still think the WC3 ships are uglier than their WC1/2 counterparts)

Standoff could really use an easier difficulty mode than "rookie". It's a hell of a lot harder than WC2.

All you have to do is tie Maniac's shoes together so he has to fly on his own wing.

Halcyon: "Maniac, you're flying on the Tiger's Claw's wing today."

Maniac: "Aww, not another CAP mission..."

Halcyon: "No, I mean, you will actually be standing on the carrier's port wing."

Maniac: "WHAT?"

Halcyon: "Yes, that's right, so get to it. Also, we're out of space suits, so you'll have to make do without one."

Sometimes my hatred of Maniac has risen to the point where I've intentionally shot him down.

For Me, my most memorable moment was first getting Wing Commander. I got it in a CD-Rom pack of a little bit older flight sims of the time. It came with some stuff like F-18, Mig-29, some P-51 game "Flight of the" somethings. It also came with Wing Commander Academy. I'm little here like 6 to 8 years old.Wing Commander was a totally different monster compared to anything I ever seen before. The colors, the way you interacted with the people. The swearing, I loved it. Also,Wing Commander 1 is frickin hard, even to me now a days. I would get through a few of the first missions but I kept dying. I always remember the Eject light coming on and it frustrating me. When I finally learned how to eject that was all I did and I thought I beat the game after awhile. It was kind of funny. The game was so complex for those days. It never crossed my mind that I could live and still fail. I will always remember that.
