Morningstar Escorts.

Seventh Part of the Seal
In WC2 SO2, there are a couple of missions where you have to "Escort" the morningstars during their test jumps and other things. What I don't understand is why are we escorting them in a Broadsword? It seems like they are the ones doing the escorting. Would a Saber or a Rapier not be more appropriate for this?

I think you're conflating two missions. Canewdon 1 D is the 'escort' mission--you fly a Sabre and escort Maniac during a test jump. In Canewdon 2 A you're ordered to 'lead' a 'test patrol' which includes two Morningstars in a Broadsword. Presumably the patrol is the normal job for the Broadsword.

Both ships have tractor beams and pilot/data pod retrieval abilities. That would be a handy bonus to prevent any information about the Morningstar falling into Kilrathi hands.

Being able to actually jump is also very useful.

Yes, that is why you and angel go exploring off in those massive beasts. Also, I think a broadsword can make more jumps then a sabre without refueling.

I may be wrong but doesnt the broadsword have the ability to track jumps as well?

I didn't think of that at the time, that explains it. But I remember that I just used to sit back and be like, "I'm not getting a single shot off on any cats this time... sign..."

Again, you don't fly a Broadsword on the 'test the jump drive' mission -- you fly a Sabre (and are told the jump tracking sensors are aboard the Morningstar).

Oops sorry. Well either way, the mission you do use the broadsword, its a pretty lazy mission.
