I have seen several posts here about using VDMS to get the sound and usb joystick support in WC3. I have tried to follow the instructions but I keep getting errors. My system is a Pentium 4 with 3.2 GHz. I have 512 MB of ram. The error I keep getting is

Open failed on file .\GLOBALS.IFF

before I had a similar message with a different file that it couldn't open. I can get the game to run in dos-box but I can get the joystick to work correctly. It also seems a little slow. Can anyone here help me?

Most of those errors have to do with not telling your emulator that your CD-ROM is a CD-ROM, but I don't know how VDMSound works. DOSBox requires a very powerful computer to run Wing Commander 3.

Well I got it to work in Doxbox with the joystick patch on CIC, but it is way to choppy to play. I am telling VDMS to use mscdex. Does anyone else have an idea.

Ok. Here are the most important settings you need to change:

Under "Compatibility" you need to enable "Low-Level CD-Rom support..."
Also disable either EMS or XMS there (I disabled EMS, but other had to disable XMS and keep EMS enabled)
Btw, i still suffer under the sound stutters, but I think they got less since last time (newer Audigy 2ZS drivers, other CD-drive)

Good luck :)

I just got around both this and the joystick problem. In VDMSound under compatibility, check the "enable low-level CD-ROM support" box and uncheck the EMS box (I'm not sure this second is necessary, but I had to do this in dosbox, so I did the same here). Hope that helps.
