Kilrathi Saga WC3 Joystick issue

Howdy, I haven't registered yet but I thought I'd ask for a wee bit of help.

Anyway, been playing through the Kilrathi Saga, WC1 and 2 work fine with my Logitech Wingman Extreme USB stick. No problems at all. WC3 runs perfectly fine, in compatibility mode for Win95. I never got that good performance on my old box when I originally played it :).

But yeah, the stick doesn't seem to do anything ingame at all. I'm running Windows XP Pro. I can switch to keyboard or mouse, which is all fine and dandy, but dammit, this game is supposed to be played with a stick! Is it because I'm running in a compatibility mode? The game doesn't really work any other way, and I haven't tried any patches or anything. Does the game have a problem with USB sticks in general? I connect the stick via my Gametheater XP soundcard's external rack, so maybe that's the problem? I can switch to joystick in Alt-O, but nothing seems to be happening. I've at-tabbed out of the game to calibrate, and that doesn't seem to work either.

I'd love to play the game with a stick, but if need be, mouse will probably do okay. I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give with experience in this area.

In the windows control panel? Certainly have, I've been running this stick for a couple of years now, the test checks out fine, all the functions are working fine in windows.

Have you tried switching to 98 compatibility mode? Sometimes what happens is that other USB devices or newer DirectX features cause a conflict. Try unplugging other USB inputs and turning off different sorts of acceleration and effects in your DirectX controls.

Just tried 98 compatibility mode, no go. I'll try unplugging all other USB devices and give it a go.

Alright, I tried unplugging everything, but it still isn't seeing it. Do you guys use USB sticks for WC3 Kilrathi Saga? It's funny how it worked perfectly with WC1 and 2, but not 3, I just don't get it. It could just be that it's a logitech or something. Kind of an odd problem though. By the way, what did you mean for different types of accelleration for effects? The game is fine sound and visual wise, is there such a thing as input accelleration?

I don't think I've tried a USB stick in Kilrathi Saga yet, but I had no problem with old gameport ones. No, there isn't an acceleration for input, but temporarily scaling back all the newer fancy DirectX features might clear up some sort of conflict that is causing this issue. When you switch to Joystick in ALT+O during flight, are you making sure to hit the 'save option' button if it's available there?

Yeah. I tried that, the option is definately saved...I'll try mucking around with the different settings, but otherwise I might have to find an old school gameport stick to get it going. I personally think that the stick is a little too fancy for WC or something like that, but it worked fine in WC 1 and 2, albeit only two buttons worked. If you don't mind me asking, what particular device do you use?

I have your same version of WC3 running perfectly well with a USB joystick though I didn't always. Trick for me was just going to the control pannel and calibrating it. I don't mean just clicking calibrate, I mean going to the settings screen where it'll say "Move the joystick all the way up or down..." "Move joystick around in circles" etc etc.

Does your joystick just not respond -completely- in game? Or, like mine did, does it just get stuck ontop of the screen and you can't move it at all because it's not calibrated?

If it doesn't work then it's quite doable to play WC3 with keyboard and mouse. Though on the 95 version the keys can be very laggy and you might be stuck afterburning for a few seconds after you release the tab key. I had that problem pretty severely and that's why I switched to my joystick.

Yeah, WC3 doesn't even see the stick at all. No buttons, no nothing. I ended up playing with the mouse, innaccurate as it is, I have to play on Veteran instead of my usual Ace so the targets aren't so hard to hit. After this, I'll try WC4 and see how that goes. Other people have reported problems with the exact same device I'm using.
