Kilrathi Saga Problems in XP

I posted this on an old question of mine but no one responded so I'm assuming no one looked there (or no one wants to talk to me :() Anyway here it is in it's own thread:

I spoke too soon, the KS doesn't run correctly. WC1 and WC2 will start up and run the opening scene, but then when I get to choose to start another game or continue an old one, it closes down WC and brings me back to the main branch option box (play wing 1, wing2, etc). any suggestions?

I'll post my prophecy problem again:

I currently bought a new 1.9GHz P4 with a Nvidia Geforce 3 graphics card running windows XP and the Kilrathi Saga runs great, but prophecy's movies are too fast. They jump and skip ahead. Any tips?

I've tried disabling the sound acceleration to no avail then there was a tip on putting something (sound card?) into Win95 compatability mode. WildWeasel suggested how to accomplish this but he said click on the shortcut, but the shortcut to what? Is this the sound card?

Thanks

I've heard of that problem with The Kilrathi Saga before, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I believe it has something to do with your joystick, however. Are you still having problems with Prophecy?

John told me that since I have a SB Live! sound card right now, I'm pretty much SOL (for some reason Prophecy doesn't like that card). It's too bad too, I just got Secret Ops from a friend and I was really looking forward to playing it. :(

Well, you could always remove the card and use your motherboard's onboard sound port (if you have one of those, of course).

And there in lies my problem . . . :)

I've dealt with the same problem... what you do is as follows:
1. open up the directory you installed each game to.
2. right click on the exe file, select the properties option.
3. select the compatibility tab.
4. set the compatibility to win98/ME.
5. repeat for all game exe's, as well as the character transfer program.

There ya go! one fully functional WCKS!

Thanks Manic< I'll give it a try.

I gave it a try, now though, I can select properly, but the game music and sound FX have this repeating echo effect to them (they where fine before I made the compatablity change) and I have no sound acceleration Chosen for my DirectX. Anyone?

I just enabled sound acceleration in the DirectX config. It works now, thanks all :)

Now if I could somehow figure out how to make prophecy work with a SB Live . . . :)

Okay, one problem down, another one crops up. Now WC1 and WC3 run great but WC2 has problems. The sound is choppy but the big difference is the controls. When I press an arrow key, the ship starts to go that way, stops, and slowly speeds up till it is rotating that way at full titlt. I've go the compatablity set to Win95 and sound acceleration on.

Also, neither WC1 nor WC2 seem to like my gravis Blackhawk digital joystick. They game selector arrow to start a mission or resume an old one goes down into the bottom right corner and won't come out when I fire it up with the joystick activated. Anyone have any ideas?

Drivers, perhaps? It may or may not be related, but in the Privateer navmap (and Lemmings Chronicles, Classic tribe), my mouse cursor has a habit of shooting to the bottom left corner.

might as well get all my questions out now, I just tried to load WC Academy and Armada on my system, neither of which work. Academy says loading WC academy please wait and the cursor dances all over the screen for a bit. Arnarda says something to the effect of EMS mode of my computer is wrong and shuts down both its window and refreshes my computer desktop (everything disappears and comes back like I just booted up). I've changed each of the compatabilities to Win95 to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

Academy needs to be run from DOS. Armada can be run without any changes... or it works on mine, anyway...

Think you have it the wrong way round there, mate. Academy runs in DOS and Windows 9x, Armada is DOS exclusive because of the JEMM memory manager being incompatible with Windows.

Unfortunately, Academy cannot be run in WinXP... at least, Weasel couldn't get it to work on his, at any rate.

I'd guess that it actually probably can be run in XP. As I stated before, with Academy, Armada, Privateer, and Righteous Fire, I didn't do anything other than install the games and try to run them (in the various compatibility modes). As I recall, Hades was able to get Academy to work.

Well, now I feel foolish. It's actually rather easy to make it work.

Install Academy normally in XP. After it's installed, open its folder and right-click on the Academy shortcut. Select Properties, tab over to Memory, and then change Expanded (EMS) Memory to Auto. You shouldn't even need any of the compatibility modes.

I'm not sure if that'll solve the problem you're having, Viper, but it will allow the game to run for those of you who aren't having that problem.

You mean Manic that there is an option in WinXP to run games that are only compatimple to Win95/98 ?

Ill bye a new PC and I dont know which Win am I going to put it in,cause of compatibility probplems in XP and win2000 with old games

Maybe I should just change this post to the "Every problem ever encountered with Wing COmmander in XP" post :). here are updates on some problems that maybe someone has come across:

Kilrathi Saga: Sorry Manic, the problem didn't lie in my compatibility but my joystick. I unhooked it and the games work fine. Anyone out there have an XP patch for the Gravis Blackhawk Digital joystick (the one on the gravis website hangs up my computer ).

WC4: The only Wing Commander game that seems to work flawlessly on my system

WC:academy: I gave the EMS setting a try WildWeasel and the game runs now, smooth and sillky, but with no sound and no joystick control. Anyone out there with this problem (i have a SBLive!)

WC: Armada: Another game that was giving me an EMS memory problem. I changed the EMS memory setting in its exe and it now says that somethinig of mine is not compatible with EMS memory ??? the DOS screen flashed off before I can see it.

New problem :

WC: privateer : Same as Armada before. I get the same EMS memory error, chnage that setting in the executable and it still gives me the same error.

Any ideas on any problem I have will be of great use to me :) I'm beginning to think I need to partition off about 2 Gigs of My hard drive and run Win98 on it or maybe XP just needs to go bye-bye altogether Thanks in advance

VCPI? I'm pretty sure Armada and Privateer cannot work in any Windows.

XP uses a "dos emulator" since it doesn't have a DOS based operating system.

By the way, what is VCPI?
