Kilrathi Saga joystick troubles

Troubles, indeed. More like inoperation. I'm running 98SE, and my joystick is a plain-jane CH Flightstick that uses the soundcard's gameport I've had since I bought the Kilrathi Saga back in '96. I have of course moved on in computers since 1996, and these days the joystick just doesn't want to work correctly with the Kilrathi Saga. In Wing 1 and Wing 2 I get no joystick response at all. In Wing 3, the joystick will work for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before I have to go the options menu and recalibrate it, which wakes it up from its previous state of unresponsiveness, which it can go into at any time. Wing 1 isn't a huge problem, since the keyboard control is pretty good there, and Wing 3 isn't so much of a problem since the joystick actually *does* work, albeit intermittently. (I've become quite adept at hitting Alt-O for the options menu in a hurry) Wing 2 is a real pain with the keyboard though, since two buttons at a time is not possible, and I can only play it by giving myself the ignominious handle of CHEATER.

The problem is not the joystick, because it works like a champ in Wing 4, Prophecy, Privateer through MyJemm, and even Academy through W98SE. I've tried uninstalling my DirectX 8.1 and letting Kilrathi Saga install its DirectX 2, only to find out that my computer wouldn't even boot properly after that one. Does anyone have any ideas? Perhaps a better DirectX uninstaller is needed? Logically DirectX is still the most likely culprit in my mind.

On a sidenote, great website, great forums. (fora?) I never stopped playing Wing Commander in its various forms, and I am pleased to find a vibrant community still playing Wing Commander, though I am horrifically shocked at what the Kilrathi Saga goes for on eBay.

On a second sidenote in an already overlong post: I just picked up WC:Academy the other day for two dollars, and was pleasantly surprised to have it run straight through 98 in a good speed. It appears to pretty much be WC2. How is it that Origin made such a bad (slow, buggy) port of WC2 for the Kilrathi Saga?

That's a real pity since, IMHO,keyboard controls were perfected in WC2 DOS.

So you're playing KS in Win98 as well?

IIRC, Win98 comes with DX 4, so I assume it relies on some of those files.

Trying to uninstall DirectX, though, is like trying to remove artificial body parts once they've already been installed. At least, that's the impression I have.

You should register and join us then. :)

So are many of us. People (ie non-WC players) know how great a money maker it is.

WC2 DOS also runs fine in a Windows DOS box. Despite this, it was a very difficult job to port the old DOS games to Windows, AFAIK. I don't think many (if any at all) of the original programmers worked on KS, it's a pity that WC1KS works well, but WC2KS does not.

All right, you've sold me, I've registered.
Good bit about 98 having DirectX integral to it, I forgot that one. It just irritates me that having a vintage joystick model specifically listed as being usable for the Kilrathi Saga still isn't good enough to run it. Do people have the Kilrathi Saga running flawlessly on 98 systems? I could track down original copies of the games quite cheaply, but I really like the re-orchestrations in WC1 and 2.

Well, if nobody has any suggestions, then perhaps I'll try a new joystick. After all, it has been 7 years since I bought mine, perhaps it's time for a replacement anyways. Can anyone recommend a gameport joystick that works with Kilrathi Saga? Does anyone even make gameport joysticks these days, or is it all USB? I'd like to stick with a gameport joystick for the sake of the rest of my DOS games.

Joystick and Win ME

I had a nightmare. I had to reinstall Me and my joystick no longer worked under kilrathi saga WC1 and 2 - I had re-installed Direct X, installed DirectX 8.1 and 9.0b. No Joy

Windows saw the stick and could calibrate it

I even tried a new sound card (gameport on sound card).

I solved it by removing CH flightstick from the list of gaming devices and added a generic 3 axis 2 button stick. After that it worked sweet.

HTH
