Kilrathi Saga -- Is DoxBox necessary

Quick question, I hope. I have Kilrathi saga. I have a quasi-modern laptop (brand new about 2003) running WindowsXP. Can I run Kilrathi Saga (especially WC1 and WC2) just by setting "Windows 95/98 compatibility mode" on the executables? Or do I have to install DosBox or similar and run Kilrathi Saga through that?

I ask, because I tried the former way, the the game seems to run fine, except that the sound is very very screwed up (I get garbled or wrong sounds, or the right sounds on a 1-3 second delay), and the graphics are a little choppy at times (but other times seem fine). Is there just some setting I have to change to fix this? Or do I actually have to install and use DoxBox? It seems like, since Kilrathi Saga was re-tuned to run fine under Win95 (and I know from experience it runs fine under Win98), it ought to run fine under WinXP with compatibility mode set, the same way that Standoff does... (but maybe the Standoff team is better at fixing bugs for modern computers than the Origin team was... :-)

Kilrathi Saga is already the windows version so it won't run in dosbox. Just setting compatability mode might work, though a lot of people still have problems with it.

set compatabilit to windows 95 on wc1/2 win98 afaik generally doesn't make it work. been a while since I run windows YMMV.

It's really case dependant. It works that way for some. Some people get it to work without setting a compatability mode even. Other people need to take more drastic measures. Look up mincemeats superpatch on the forums for example.

Some of your options should you not get it to work that way though are:
1/ if you have a cd with win98 or95 on it and your PC is fast enough. Try creating a virtual machine ( a win9x environment running from within xp).

2/ Pick up a cheap dos version on ebay and get it to run in dosbox. That should work ok though I'd need to know your CPU first. In many respects its often easier to set up WC3 in dosbox than kilrathi saga in XP.

Thanks for the tips. I probably should have read the other threads first--I notice mincemeat has a lot of tips about how to make it work. I'll play with it and see what happens...

Just a follow up for anyone who might have had similar problems:

The audio problems I had turned out to be related to the fact that I had changed my audio settings to get SecretOps/Standoff working. I had disabled audio acceleration as per suggestions on this site in order to make SecretOps work. Once I re-enabled the acceleration, WC1 and WC3 (Kilrathi Saga versions) both worked fine in XP, with no need to set compatibility mode...
