Kilrathi Saga in Win2K

I just re-installed my copy of Kilrathi Saga in Windows 2000...been a VERY long time since I've played any of the games.

Anyway, I've tried starting all 3 games to make sure they work and WC2 and WC3 start fine, but WC1 crashes as soon as the "Start Vega Campaign" screen comes up.

Anyone know if there are any fixes for this?
 
That's not a common problem.. we'd probably need more details to investigate what's happening. How does it crash? Windows 2000 does have some as yet unbeatable incompatibilities with certain Wing Commander games.
 
The installation works just fine...no error messages. I've tried running WC1 both with and without the SM packs installed.

The opening movie/music runs perfectly. Then, when the opening ends and the screen with the "Start Vega Campaign" button should come up, it loads briefly (just enough to see it for half a second or so) and then the game just shuts down and I'm returned to the Kilrathi Saga loader.

I've also tried running it with and without a joystick and I have the same problem.

I've played this version of WC1 just fine with Win98 and, though I did run across a few minor problems with WinXP, nothing that crashed the game.

It almost seems like the game is exiting normally as soon as the opening movie ends without any user input.
