Hey guys,
I dont know if you can help but.... I just downloaded Wing Commander Academy off of a site, and extracted it all into a folder called wing commander on my C drive. I am running Win XP and am wondering what kind of changes I will need to make to get it to run? Thanks!

One more thing...

I own Wing 1-3, but might see if I can buy the rereleased version of those (Kilrathi Saga). Would that be a good decision or am I gonna run into a lot of problems? If so, would it be easier to work those issues out with Kilrathi Saga or with the original version of those games? Again, I am running Win XP, 1.5 Ghz AMD Athlon (obviously much to fast)...etc, let me know if you can help at all. Thanks so much!

No changes, per se, but VDMSound will probably help.

Doesnt load

When I click on the shortcut, it goes to the dos window and then does not do anything. Any ideas to what is causing this?

It's the Dos protected mode. It doesn't work in windows. Depending of your computer speed (at least 1Ghz PC), you can try DosBox on SourceForge.net, it's a free Dos emulator and you'll be able to play Wing Commander Academy in WinXP.

sweet

That Dos emulator worked perfectly! Thanks so much. Do you know if that emulalator will allow me to run WC I & II?

Screen size

I also can't get the emulator to display fullscreen, the monitor doesnt recognize the input or something...any ideas?

What?! Academy works flawlessly in Windows. Sides why would windows have a problem with protected mode? It runs in protected mode. Armada and Privateer 1 are a different beast as they need JEMM.

The inability of WinXP and Academy is due to Microsofts clever decision to not ship proper DOS with it and is an XP stupidity (I still don't get it people use that OS).

What kind of monitor? Modern LCD-type ones seem to sometimes have trouble displaying 320x240 resolution stuff..

Fullscreen: Have you tried Alt+Enter to switch from fullscreen to window mode.

Support: WC1 and 2 works fine, but for WC2 you need savegames, because you can't type anything in the Create New Player or in the Import Savegame. Privateer and Armada doesn't work for now.

Monitor

Yeah I have an LCD monitor... I tried alt Enter, and that is when it gave me the error. I am thinking of partitioning my drive and installing win 95 or something...would that be worth it? (this way I could run WC 1-4 without problems I hope?)

I do know some about Academy running on WinXP, but I noticed that you downloaded it from a site. No reason to help someone who can help themselves.

As for Kilrathi Saga, I'm running WinXP 2.0 GHz P4, and the only problem is using an USB joystick with WC3.
