I have a Logitech 3D Pro and was wondering if I could get it to work in old games such as Privateer. Its fairly new, USB, no serial so it might be a little to new. Do you think I could get it to work or will I have to resort to keyboard and mouse?

Whoops forgot to mention im not using DOSBox. My computer is very old and doesnt like to handle running DOSBox with some of the newer games, Privateer is one of them.

Well, I don't know of a way to run any USB stuff at all in actual DOS. If you're in Windows 98 or a later version of 95 with USB support, the myJEMM overlay will let you use a USB stick. http://www.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/u/rridge/myjemm.html You do need practically 1 GHz to run Privateer in DOSBox. Feel free to register and start a thread in the general forum about your adventures replaying the game once you get it running.

Thanks but MyJEMM isnt working, I can't download it. A page comes up and says something abut forbidden. What does MyJemm actually do? Does it allow me to play Privateer in windows mode?

Thanks!

Just a few days ago, I got the urge to play Privateer again. So, I went about setting up my Windows 98 computer to play the game in DOS. I got my config.sys and autoexec.bat files set up with the correct CD-ROM DOS Device Driver. The game was mostly working except I couldn't get the digital sound (speech and sound effects) to work properly. I didn't have a joystick problem since I have an older CH joystick that uses the sound card's game port. However, I did have a problem with my Diamond Monster Sound MX 300 Sound Card's Sound Blaster Emulation. The music (FM synth.) would play fine, but the digital sound would hiss and pop. Then, I went to the Internet to search for a solution and found myJemm 1.4 on this site (Thanks goes to Wing Commander CIC for hosting the file). This is a great program. Now, Privateer runs in Windows 98 and is stable most of the time. The only problem is that the digital sound causes some minor glitches, but I can now hear the speech and sound effects. Also, I was able to switch the music to General Midi which wasn't available in DOS thru the Sound Blaster Emulation.

Basically, I wanted to say "THANKS!!" to Ross Ridge for the work he put into myJemm. Without myJemm, I would have had to reassemble my 486 DOS machine to play Privateer with full sound. Thanks man!

The Monster Sound can have some compatibility problems. Getting people to play the old games is one of our most important roles here, and we're lucky to now be in a time when special tools for this exist. For several years, people had some difficulty as everything transitioned to Windows XP. Even if we'd have had stuff like myJemm and DOSBox back then, we wouldn't have had fast enough computers to emulate the environments in Windows. It's a good time to be a Wing Commander fan.
