Joystick issue with Armada

Starkey

Avenging Rooster
I have the floppy version of Armada and my joystick does not work well. It shakes a lot and does not turn left (...?). It is a regular 2-button joystick and I have a P166, 40Mb Ram, SB PCI 128 and a SiS 6326 Videoboard.

I have tried to calibrate it but it doesn´t do any good. The joystick work fine with other games.

help

okay, I am putting this back on top so if anyone can help me on the joystick issue I´d be really glad.

BTW, is there an Armada manual online? I wanna know how to make those fortresses produce heavy fighters and also read about the multiplayer stuff...

Did you try the patch?
(not the PG one, the one that adds passwords for the gauntlet)
This one is supposed to fix some joystick issues as well, it also offers a separate joystick calibration utility.
For me it actually breaks the joystick routines for most older sticks, but maybe it works for you.

How?

Indeed, my joystick is old. I installed the patch before even playing the game. Do you think the patch may be causing the problem?

How??? What you mean by how?
Yes - the patch could be causing the problem. _COULD_ you have to try.

I can only say that most newer joysticks are relatively linear in their reactions (Rudder Pedals have to be very very linear for example).
Older sticks had cheaper potentiometers that had not been linear at all. So you got maybe a value of 0 for left, 1000 for center and 1200 for right. This shows that calibration is far from easy. I guess the patched Armada is made for the more expensive sticks, but I am just guessing here.

If you want to try just rename the current armada.exe to armnew.exe and copy back the original armada.exe
Then start which file you like the old or the new one.

Sorry, I did not express my question well, but you gave me the answer I was looking for:

Thanks a lot, cff, I´ll give it a try and tell you later if it worked.
BTW, what else does the patch do? Will I change anything else if I "remove" the patch, besides changing the game´s response to my joystick?

There are two patches IIRC. One is the Proving Ground Addon which should not be of interest for this problem. The other one is the Armada patch.

Yes - you will change one detail: You will loose the capability to continue the Gauntlet mode via command line passwords. This is the only change I am aware of.

I've been struggling with Armada stuff for nigh on six months... my joystick is definitely not the problem, because it works flawlessly in WC2, WC3, WC4, WCP, WCP:SO and whatever other games I play that need the joystick. It's a Logitech Wingman Attack.

But anyway...
