I've seen various "forum talk" (for lack of a better term [jive talk is better!?]), and I'm not sure exactly what the terms mean. Since I've become somewhat of a regular poster, I feel I should start to learn these. I'd appreciate answers to these ?'s as well as notifying me of other "forum talk" I'm unaware of. Also, this is my 150th post, and I'm now a 1st Lt.!!!

1)trolling: I've read the warning "no trolling" on various threads (not to me fortunately), but don't know the exact meaning. Is it posting a link to a competing site, irrelevent babble, something else, or all of the above?

2)flame wars: I think this is a thread/forum degenerating into personal attacks. Am I right?

3)other words I might come across: ???

Trolling is when someone posts to a thread specifically to stir up a fight. If someone posted a thread asking how to get Privateer 2 running on their computer and you replied "Don't worry, Privateer 2 sucks!!!!!!", then you'd be trolling.

For many of the terms you might come across on the Internet, the Wikipedia is actually a pretty good source to clear up things somewhat (slight variations may apply from forum to forum). So, a flame war according to the Wikipedia is:

Flaming is the performance of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting in the social context of a discussion board (usually on the Internet). Such messages are called flames, and are often posted in response to flamebait.

A flame war is a series of flaming messages in an electronic discussion group or message board system such as usenet, mailing lists or forums. There are a number of characteristics of electronic communication which have been cited as being conducive to flame wars. Electronic communications do not easily transmit facial expressions or voice intonations which may serve to moderate the tone of a message. Also, there is typically a lag time between the time a message is transmitted and the time a reply is read. These two characteristics can cause a "positive feedback loop" in which the emotional intensity of an electronic exchange increases to extremely high levels.

Alternatively, flame wars may be instigated deliberately by Internet trolls. Not all trolls are successful, though.

There are hyperlinks to other terms in the text, so it makes some enjoyable and educating reading... - the articles about "Internet Trolls" got me chuckling quite some times. :D

I've trolled a bit in my time. I was bashing GTA one day when someone was asking some technical question about it. I see now why it's in such poor taste.
