I will share the steps I took to get it to work. Any help with the joystick would be greatly appriciated!!! Step by step instructions please.

I have 2 CH Fighterstick pro's one USB and the other is the old game port style.

I have been burning to play this game for years!!! On a wim I decided to try it with windows XP and am amazed I was able to get it to work with very little trouble!!!

I have a P4 1.8 GHZ system with 512MB ram, Geforce FX 5200 Ultra and a Creative Audigy sound card. The game runs perfectly except I have not been able to get the joystick working and it's near impossible to play with the keyboard.

I am using the original Dos version of the game and I am not using a dos box or anything I just double click the wc3 EXE right from windows and the game starts up and plays perfectly.

Installation.
1. open the command prompt.
2. type the letter of your CD rom Drive (h: Enter) for me.
3. Type wc3.
a. the program will test your video follow the onscreen prompts and then choose exit this menu
4. next setup your sound card. I am using a soundblaster audigy so I chose Sound blaster compatable and left all the seetings at default.
a. note during the test I did not hear anything but I continued anyways.
5. exit that menu and choose set up FX card.
6. again I chose sound blaster compatable, enter through everything leaving the DMA and IRQ settings just how they are.
7. go down the list to copy file to computer and copy each catagory to your HD, you will need to go back in to the selection for each category separately until all categories are copied over.
a. note the default install is c: I have not found a way to change the path.
8 Now choose exit and save settings.
9. once you are back in windows go to your CDrom im My Computer and explore the CD.
10. copy all files form the disc over to your C:\WC3 folder.
11. Now you need to download VDMS to get your sound working.
A. I found it by google search.
12. install VDMS and keep all the defaults during installation.
13. go to your WC3 folder and right click the WC3 exe and choose the option run with VDMS.
14. at this point my game locked up. hit alt-del to get back to the desk top.
15. go back into your wc3 folder in windows and and left double click the wc3 exe.
16. now the game will run with sound automatically.
17. the game plays perfectly but the color is in 256, so you wont see any cockpit in space, but all the movies run and the game runs at the right speed.
18. enjoy!

Well, I, like some others here, got it running via VDMS, too. But the problem is, for some people (including myself) the Sound FX is creepy and sometimes even crashes the game. :(
But guess your how to might still help a lot of others out there ;)

To your Joystick problem: Sorry, no idea about that, my MS Precision Pro works without any problems - AFTER installing the Joystick patch, that is. Have you tried that yet? You can find it in the wcnews download section. Maybe that helps you ;)

I seem to be on the threshhold of getting this to work on Windows XP. Can anybody tell me how I can find out which digital sound settings my soundcard has so I can get the digital sound?
