Herman du Preez

Chief Petty Officer
I feel like such a rookie but here goes: So i'm replaying wc2 and I am on special ops 2, just after thrakkath escapes in the crossbow. I give chase ad fail to shoot down khassra. The following missions are, for me, near damn impossible. So four sabres, we take down the gothri and then coe the cruisers and all my wingmen go up in smoke. I can't get close to the cruisers to launch torps, as if my shields and armor are made of paper! Did I do something wrong in a previous mission to deserve this? I swear I don't remember it being this hard! Would love some tips or tricks or if all else fails, gog wc2 cheats (I don't want to go down that path). Thanks!

Hello! The good news is you haven't done anything wrong and it's okay to let Khasra go. If you made it to this point you're already one heck of a pilot. The bad news is... you've hit the single hardest mission in the entire Wing Commander series.

And unfortunately it's not a case where there's a single tactic that'll help you through it. It's so tough because the Sabre's shields are pretty light and you're getting hit from two things: the antimatter guns on the cruisers (they look like neutrons) and your own wingman who in this specific mission seem to love shooting through you. Watch out for them (try watching your rear camera during a play through so you can see what they're doing to you.)

Your best bet is going to be to try and play fast with the torpedo run. Take out the escorts slowly and deliberately and then hold outside the cruisers' flak envelope. Move in close enough to lock your torpedo at maximum range THEN speed up and make the run as fast as you can. Do not be afraid to call off if you're too damaged, pull outside the flak envelope and recharge for another try. Rinse and repeat... taking it slowly and recharging your shields between each run. It's easy to score your first hit and then get cocky... but it's best to take it super slow.

(It's also possible to fly between the two Fralthra, let them target you with their antimatter guns and then run like hell before they hit you... they'll end up blasting each other. That's extremely difficult to pull off!)

Mr. Loaf, thank you! I must say I have tried a few of these already. The MOMENT you come in to range to start torp lock-on they fire the damn blue balls and if you maneuver JUST a little too much the torpedo lock-on quits! Also those kitties CHARGE you. I wish there was some way to reverse engines eh? One of my favorite tricks is to corkscrew may way in. Something I do in Saga against the corvettes. Roll and bank at the same time but the controls in WC2 does not allow for that. Wonder if side slipping might work. I'll keep sending wings against them and report back once those cruisers are down admiral!

AKA the Maniac Move, IIRC. I hear it requires plot shields to pull.

What worked for me is then fly around one, and for some strange AI logic, the far fralthra targets the one inbetween you.. Resulting a "NOOOOO!!" The one horrid item I always seemed to get in this scenario was my ITTS system got destroyed so you can't use your torpedoes, and no way to take down the base.. I had aborted the final mission of WC2 so many times because the Thrakhath or the Drakhai busted the ITTS I can't even recall took me numerous tries over the course of many days(A 386SX-25 was not the fastest in loading the spaceflight sequences)
