HELP! with 3DS max R5

HammerHead

Rear Admiral
My 3d studio max refuses to show me background under the "viewport background" option.

Now - the story is like this - It first installed it a week ago - and it worked. then while I was working it crashed, and then, when I re-run the program, it didn't work.
So, I uninstalled the program, (I also formated my computer and re-installed Win, but that thanx to old billy gates, nothing to do with the 3ds)
Now, I've installed 3ds-max again...and... IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!

Plz! any one who has a clue...
PLEASE HELP!!! :(

Cracked software tends to do that...

Lol, I'm just kidding, I have no idea if your program is legal or not. I have a smattering of experience with several different programs but 3d max is one where I've done nothing more then open once in class and that was it. Maybe one of the other guys can help you out.

I has remember, Max uses CDilla for copy protection, but sometimes spyware removers, like Spybot, consider this a threat. By removing it, the software won't work.
Make sure you have the correct DirectX version too. For 5.0, I think it was DX8.1 and for Max 5.1 and 6, it's DX9.
Other then that, sorry I can't help more, since I don't have it. I barely know how to make a cube and a teapot anyway. :o

Yeah, my copy of gmax has a horrible tendancy to screw with viewport settings. Are you using up-to-date video card drivers? Is your viewport background set to "display viewport"?

(sorry for the last one, but we all make mistakes, sometimes)

This brings a question up... how many people here actually have *legit* copies of $3,000 dollar software like 3DSMax, or is there a more accessible option that people use instead? I know about Milkshape but Im still working on some differences with it.

surprisingly enough, I will not go into legal issues here, but you can get an affordable version of 3d max with those nice big giant tutorial books. Sure, you may not get the "full" version, but for 99% of what we people do, it's more then enough. Not to mention several universities provide cheap access to these kind of programs. I personally have not used 3d max very much but at our local college, for example, if you enroll in the class you have access to the "academic" version of the program for free (you can take the cd home and register).
