Help LOAF Network Armada!

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
Heyall,
As always, I'm continuing to expand WC Computer... and I want to give her the ability to network Armada. Unfortunately, there are two caveats:

- I have no idea what kind of network device I need, since I'm wholly ignorant towards... well, pretty much everything.

- Whatever it is, it has to be external, since I've filled up WC Computer with many soundcards (up to five now!).

So... does anyone know what type of circa-1994 external network... thing... I should be on the lookout for?

I don't know of any external network interface that could work in DOS... but you could use an external modem. If you want to play in a LAN, you'll have to clear a slot in your computer. You can still find used ISA network cards if the only empty slot is ISA (I suppose you have an old computer).

All three of my ISA slots are used up:/

Since posting, I found an external NIC that plugs into a parallel port... which also claims to have DOS drivers. I figure it's worth a shot! A Google!Groups search turned up people who'd had good luck playing DooM over a network with similar devices years back...

Good luck, I hope the driver isn't too big... Doom runs in protected mode, so base memory isn't an issue. Does Armada also runs in protected mode or not, just like the other WC games ?

Tell us how it goes !

Failing that, use a serial/laplink cable and connect com port to com port. That's only good for linking two machines though.

You need a DOS IPX driver (very old) or an IPXODI driver (more recently). The funny thing is that this IPXODI linker is named differently for each and every card and they are not compatible with others. Mine are named 1208odi.com, An16.com or De528.com

Everything else is a matter of tuning and getting the right proggies (LSL.COM, IPXODI.COM, NETBIOS.COM). Be warned there are different version of the first two. Earlier versions are smaller, but don't work with all network card specific drivers.

As for extrenal solutions - I don't know of any network cards that are pre USB and don't use up a slot in you PC (ISA or PCI).
