Hakaga Mission Challenge

Thunderbolt

Rear Admiral
Hey folks

I'm just gonna point out something I found out by mistake in the Hakaga strike mission in Episode 4. I'm not sure if other people have found this but to make it almost impossible (if you like a real challenge) that in mission 1 you need to clear the first nav point and then eject or destroy no capital ships at nav point 2. Then in the next mission against the Hakaga you should have to fight through a destroyer and 2 frigates at the first nav point. But you can just kill the kilrathi fighters and autopilot to skip past the blockade. Once you reach the Super carrier and 2 Snakiers you will also now have to face 1 destroyer and 2 frigates.

I found that pathway by mistake and it seems to be almost impossible to win so if you like a real hard challenge give it a go. You tend to lose fighters and waste afterburn fuel and/or torpedoes at Nav 1 so by the time you reach the Hakaga it is a serious challenge to stay alive especially because that Kilrathi have an extra destroyer and 2 frigates that fill your ship with flak. If I'm in a Rapier I might rarely be lucky enough to escape otherwise in a Crossbow I usually have to end up ejecting because every confed fighter gets destroyed and I'm solo against 30 kilrathi fighters with no torpedoes or anything.

Yeah I actually did a few runs like this when testing Ep4. It's not impossible (I believe I nailed the Hakaga at least once in each fighter type), but it certainly is challenging. It definitely makes the encounter feel even more epic than it was previously.

Yeah... looking back, maybe I shouldn't have listened to those "there's too many capships in the first mission" people... the Hakaga mission didn't really need to be harder, it just should have been harder to clear away all the escorts in the previous mission :p.

We did make the Hakaga mission too easy in the end, because we had made numerous changes to try and make it easier... before we realized that there was a bug with the Targus was preventing the AI from using any torpedoes on the Hakaga, but then some of the other changes made it into the final version.

And you only need the freely available starter package in order to play Standoff. Which is included in the big Standoff package.

It's not actually included in any Standoff package, but is available for download from (a different link in) our downloads page.

Provided that you did a good job in the previous mission, the Hakaga mission isn't all that hard provided that you take out a good number of hangers on the Hakaga, and then taking out the turrents. The wingmen are good enough on hero to finish it and the Snakeirs and the Hakaga off.

I still think that the mission where you have to take out the snakeirs in eps2 was much harder due to the idiotic broadswords trying to dogfight

I personally won Torpedo Deliveries (the Hakaga losing version) with the Crossbow, Sabre and Rapier without that much trouble, but then I was playing on Rookie. :p

By the way how many ships can you now fit into a nav point without having the engine crash? In the losing stream of mission 2 you face a Hakaga, 2 Snakiers, 1 Destroyer and 2 Frigates. Then there are nearly 30 confed fighters and at least as many kilrathi fighters.

To be honest I was amazed that you could fit that much in and still it runs really smoothly.

We don't know the limit the engine can handle - originally, it was limited to a lot less than you see in that mission, but after all our patches, we just don't know the limit. The limit of what the engine can handle, though, seems to be much higher than the limit of what players can handle. That is to say, we've had our testers begging for mercy, but not the engine itself :p.

After going through Ep4 testing with you guys I'm pretty sure I've moved up to v 1.5 :)

You learn very quickly that if you beat a mission on the first test run, it isn't hard enough.

It seems like you guys have done a better job than the sim designers prior to BoT. Lonewolf remarks that he's never seen so many ships at once and the sims at home couldn't even attempt to simulate it. Good job on one upping designers six hundred years in the future. :D

Yeah please notch up the difficulty and number of ships for Episode 5 even more than ep 4. The epic battles in Standoff should be something worth remembering :)

If you want a real challenge try playing on Nightmare and while doing this challenge that's an epic battle.

Nightmare is the difficulty I usually try to play at. Mission survivability is a bit of a problem for some of the longer missions though. I wonder if one way around that would be to have your carrier at the nav point your fighting at so you can land to refuel, repair and most importantly save. An example in episode 5 might be where you have two fleets; confed and kilrathi facing each other from some distance. Once your ship is out of torpedoes or afterburn fuel you have to land for refuelling etc to also continue the mission tree. Essentially you're at the same nav point but you need to dock on the carrier to continue the game.

Hey I am back, Renember me?^^

I love Episode 4, but it is really just to easy to clear all escorts and kill the Hakaga (I play normally at nighmare) the only prob is, that you have to be carefull that not to many of yours sabres get killed before they took out enough capships, but ....

not importen
great new Espisode and funny ways to make the Hakaga mission into a real hard one. without killing the eskort and than playing at nightmare against the Hakaga...that really is a nightmare (and i couldn't win until now^^

I wish I had more time for this grerat new Episode, but on the other Hand, no one challegnd my Highscores on the Scoreboard...

Who can forget the guy who cleared out the initial set of simulator scoreboards? :p

And I see you just took my golden medal for the Crossbow in Mission 10... by 40 points (less than one kill). Lucky for you I'm too busy to have another go at it. :)
