Frequent crashes with SO

This is my first time replaying SO on a Winxp computer, I have set Win95 compatibility mode and have also put in the high-res patch. However, it seems like my game is extremely unstable and often crash during mid-missions. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? And perhaps ways to prevent some of the crashes?

Btw, I noticed I can only play 1 mission at a time at best, trying to play a 2nd mission after finishing one will guarantee a crash during mid-mission.
 
Definitely get rid of the high resolution patch and see if it becomes stable. If you're running 32-bit color (with the patch), try 16-bit instead. What type of hardware do you have?
