I actually like the Armada Cockpits.
Anybody remember the Jratekh (Was that the name?) of the Wing Commander Academy game? I really liked that cockpit.
Edit: and some fond praise for the movie Rapier cockpit. Has anyone ever taken the time to look at the detailing they did on that thing? It's full of awesome switches and gauges and such that all have Wing Commander-appropriate futuristic descriptions.
The Jrathek cockpit was in Armada, too (with more subdued colors.)
I couldn't buy it when it was first released, and it's very hard to find old games around here.
There are sanctuaries for older games now days where they are allowed to run free and wild. It isn't as god originaly intended but old Dos games have a new home. Pick up a copy of Dosbox and allow Armada to run free in it's full majestic glory. Don't give up.
One of the things I missed in the latter games was cockpit damage. Seeing broken controls and wires sticking out really gave the impression that your fighter had taken a beating.
Further - I miss the VDUs taking damage the way they did in the first two WC games. While the exploding monitors were nice and all, there was something to be said about the VDU flickering and not working properly. (A purely asthetic perference on my part)
