Ems Xms

I've managed to procure an older computer today with Win95 and the CD-ROM works in true DOS as well. I haven't installed any of my old Wing Commander games but I'm trying to install some old Westwood games and once I have them installed and I type the command to play them it says something about noth enough ems or xms memory. 512k required to play. This isn't exactly Wing Commander tech support related but I was wondering if any of you remember old games saying this and how to solve that little problem. Thank you.

Ah, well, you'll need to do several things.

First, you'll need to know if you need XMS or EMS memory - they're incompatible, and you can have one or the other (more or less). Then use a real DOS - DOS 6.22. There's a utility on there called "memmaker" that'll help you set up memory properly - most likely, you'll need an all-XMS configuration, and one that has EMS allocated, as well as one without any memory managers.
