OK, I know this has been brought up several times before:
http://www.crius.net/zone/showthread.php?t=8488&highlight=dols
http://www.crius.net/zone/showthread.php?t=4921&highlight=dols
But since I’m a sucker for details, I thought I’d put in my two centicredits worth.
Well, over the course of all things WC, we have four different currencies listed.
The only currency we know a bit about is the ever ubiquitous “Credit”, which appears to be the standard unit of currency used in areas controlled by the Terran Confederation, and is devisable by subunits of "centicredits" .
Fleet Action makes use of the “dollar”. Now, this could be a slipup on part of Forstchen (For example, Imperial units of measure appear in Action Stations while the rest of the WC universe appears to be solely metric). However, Victory Streak makes reference to "UNation dollars".
Now sometime between 2167 and 2200 the UN was apparently supplanted by the World Economic Consortium, which in turn was replaced by the Terran Confederation in 2416. Taking this matter into account, if there were “UNation dollars” in use at some time, they would be hopelessly antiquated by the 27th century. To wit, it would be akin to trying to spend a 17th century English Sixpence at a modern American 7-11.
If “dollars” are still used in some capacity, then they are probably the same thing as “dols”, mentioned in Voices of War, wherein one of the prizes for a simulator competition is rumored to be a check for 1000 dols, which is said to be “good at any Confederation trading outpost.”
In Star*Soldier, Chandra Karr passes “a crippled human playing a Wu stringo, [where I stop] to put a two-dol chit in his hat. He looks up at me with unmasked disgust.”
The cause of the man’s disgust could stem from any of three factors. The first simply being a mater of pride (don’t you dare pity me!), secondly, 2 dols might be a measly, token sum. The third might have to do with the dol being worth less (or considered worth less) than credits, similar to the American dollar in relation to the peso or Canadian dollar.
(I recall several times I’ve tried to use Canadian money in the US. To date, I have only succeeded in doing this once, and it wasn’t at Point Roberts.)
Forum member Bob McDob theorized the presence of dols alongside credits represents the reluctance of some of the Confederation member states to relinquish their traditional currency, similar to how Britain separates itself from the EU by using the pound instead of the Euro. Given the fragmentation present after the Nephilim War, it’s not surprising to see both units freely used, regardless of their relation.
But regardless of what the answer may be, I have gone ahead and created this list for two reasons:
a.) As a chart to analyze and dissect the economic workings of the Confederation and its associated territories.
b.) As a guide or reference for future fan project in order to align them closer to canon works.
I have grouped them by time periods in the event that there is notable inflation at work.
And until someone says otherwise, I’m just going to treat all listed currencies as being equal in value.
