Hey guys !!
> You all seem to know a lot of stuff about the universe of Origin Games :)
Well, do you also know how to properly run them on a new, faster machine (for example a Athlon 1700/WIN98 2nd/394 MB RAM) ????

I'm asking u that cos i can't get it running even in Win98's Dos Real Mode (i mean with complete reboot in the dos huh, not a simple dos prompt window, but u've already got it sry :D) )
Effectively, every time i try to load the game it gives me the following error messages :

With emm386 OFF : after memory intitialization stage 1 finishes succesfully, i get :
"Halted file MEMORY\CPROTMEM.C line 1634"

With emm386 ON > 2048 RAM allocated for EMS it says , still after stage 1 success :
"FATAL ERROR 286.3330", followed by the usual memory error addresses.
The fun thing on this one is that, according to the Bioforge (yes, i said Bioforge, wich apparently uses nearly the same dynamic memory initialization system and wich surprisingly works right on my machine) install guide i've kept preciously all these years, the 286.3330 error means ... hum... that u have not enough ... XMS memory (i remember i said i had 394 MB :=) )

I get the same message with the NOEMS parameter added after emm386.exe on the config.sys file, making me think that the problem doesn't come from EMS management.

With emm386 ON < 2048 RAM for EMS, once again after stage 1 success :
"Fragment 0 bellow minimum size, not enough memory"

FInally, here's the greatest : when himem off (i just add REM on the device=windows\command\himem.sys line of the config.sys file) the games finishes the 2 stages, allocates all the "memory fragments" as it says , and freezes at the final game loading (aaaargh !!!!! i was 'bout to make it !!!!) which is understandable cos without himem, we all know that there's no XMS management and so virtually no XMS (RAM) memory available in dos mode and i've never heard of anyone who has managed to make anygames work without a byte of ram :=)

I really hope i've been clear enough and that i've not taken too much of ur time in this great piece of work on the WC world

Ps: By the way, has EA Games ever talked about making sequels to Origin's Bioforge and WCP itself ?

This is really weird. Oh, well, DOS is a Microsoft product, so nothing is impossible :)

How much free base memory have you got?

About WCP sequel, yeah, it was supposed to be a trilogy, so I bet there is a script hidden somewhere in their lockers. We all hope they´ll conclude the series.

Sorry, I don´t think I can figure out that problem of yours. Maybe someone who has the game can give you a clue.

This is what you do:

Download a thing called 'Bumble B's Bee Hive Boot Disk' (Or something like that) and install it to a floppy disk.

You then start your computer with the floppy in your computer and a menu should appear. Here is my usual order for running No Remorse & No Regret:

1, 2, 1, 2.

EDIT:

http://community.the-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~/pub/bootdisks/

The 7th one down.

It should work.

Its funny, i dont knwo how to fix it, but i'm having the same problem. Strange thing is, i can run No regret without any problem

This forum is for WC tech help. This ain't a WC question. Post this in the off-topic zone...

Oh, wow, when did you become a moderator? That's an amazing turnaround - last I heard you were two strikes towards being .htaccessed.

(Any tech support questions are welcome here.)

Me, a mod?... No more than LeHah or certain other non-mod individuals who see fit to rail against others.

However, bein' as I've been "spanked" a couple times lately for doing things I had no idea were "frowned upon" by y'all, I figgered I'd try to steer someone *else* away from encountering such an ...unpleasant... experience. Better such a warning coming from me than from a moderator.

Further, I didn't know that *ANY* tech q's were welcome here. Now that I know this, I have one more place to turn with some of the quandaries that have been plaguing me lately...

Yes, all tech questions are welcome - hence there are currently two threads about fixing a broken computer and one where *someone* is looking for a joystick manual. :)

The further you get from WC, the less likely it gets that someone will be able to help... but Crusader is, as the intial post explained, in a similar boat with various DOS WC's.
