COMPUTER DOES NOT BOOT AT ALL

My computer freezes ,screen goes black and I see little green vertical lines (about 5mm long) on the top of the monitor like that: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

I try to reboot the system . The hard disk spins all fans and cdrom drives are working hard disk red led stays on for about 15 seconds and there is no action in the screen. It is like the screen is not connected to the VGA card. That’s the most common situation.

I’ve also noticed some other behaviors in my attempts to reboot the system :
-computer starts with no problems and after a while freezes (black screen and green lines)
-computer starts with no problems and after a while freezes in the current working desktop with green lines on the top and the mouse is moving
-the system suddenly reboots (no action from user or a scheduled task from a program)
-I hear multiple beeps during boot process and no further action is taken (no action in screen)
-sometimes the cpu fan is not working (the fan is checked and it is in very good condition).

I’ve checked all the AC power supply system (wall lines ,sockets cords, etc) for corrosion ,loose connections and high resistance and there is no ploblem. I connected the screen to another system and it works fine. I replaced all disk cables with new good quality ..….nothing

I disconnected all (from power and M/B) cdroms ,floppy ,s/card ,speaker ,reset-button ,and leds with no success.

I tried everything and the only way to make my computer bootable is to clear the cmos with the jumper on the M/B and remove- reattach the CPU.

I made a full system scan with Norton2000 and Microsoft scandisk and found nothing.

My System: M/B: ELITE P6BA-A+ BIOS: Award Software 07/06/99 , POWER SUPPLY: PAN STAR PSA-235 ATX, CPU CELERON 366 (OVERCLOCKED: 75X5.5), RAM: 1X32MB+2X64MB SIMM, H/D SEAGATE ST-38420A 8,6GB (MASTER IN IDE1), VGA: DIAMOND VIPER 550 16MB AGP TV-OUT(extra cooling fun is attached on the vga processor and it is not overclocked) S/CARD: SOUND BLASTER LIVE 1024(CONNECTED IN PCI No2, MODEM: LUCENT (IN PCI No4) MONITOR : JEAN 15’’ JD157p, CDROM: asus 40x CD-S400/A(MASTER IN IDE2) CDRW: PHILIPS PCA460RW(SLAVE IN IDE 2) KEYBOARD: LITEON SK-7100 PS2 INFRARED (no software installed) MOUSE: PS2 A4TECH Scroll 4d trackball wwt-13

Please help me with this . I would be very grateful

THANKS

The CPU fan is what worry me. Either the fan is bad or your power supply is failing. If the CPU is gets too hot your system will fail. Is your MB dusty. Blowing it out with a can of air. The BIOS is old I suggest updating it. Make sure in fan on the power supply is working and not full of dust.

Well, if your computer boots up to windows, it's probably the OS (again). Try running scandisk or the system file checker to get rid of corrupted files. It might also be your BIOS, if you can't boot up at all. If so, you might try sending the chip back to the manufacture to have it flashed. Worked for me.

The ||||| sounds a lot like the time my video card died. I saw lots of those ||||||s in the days before it died. Have you tried booting with another card? In my case, I had to use electronic contact spray on both the card and the slot, and then it worked again. Removing and reseating your card might also be a good idea.

I smell a hardware problem, most definitely. I think that your video card is having problems with your OS. Either spray the video card and it's slot with air or replace it. The MB might also be a smidge old or abused somehow, make sure she's ventliated!!!

Whoa! This makes my hard disk self-destructing sound tame! And Dad still thinks it'll work - this after a reformat... with about a meg of bad clusters.

*gg* Sounds very familiar. The PC of my father was hacked. It destroyed itself...every day a bit more. Nothing ran any more. The Exlorer, the system programs, the Burner, the Internet. We formated one time, now we've got most things on it again, but it still doesn't work. We don't know what kind of virus it was, or where it wrote itself in...but we think it still has it. Maybe in the BIOS. For ex. if I want into the Internet, it got to dial ten or so times, because it always closed or hanged itself up...it's funny. We'll have to formate again. Let's hope it's better then.

Then formatting won't help. You need to run an anti-virus tool like Norton Antivirus, after booting from a non-infected floppy.

But it was installed. It didn't help. We think the virus infiltrated the hard-disk and the BIOS. A new BIOS Setup would be quite more complicated...:(

Ehh... I think mine's more a case of hardware failure than virus attack. It's not connected, and I know that doesn't make it invincible to viruses, but even hard disks don't last forever. Thankfully, I think I've convinced Dad to look for a new HD. Phew!
