If any wingnuts like to play the "gentleman's game" - I welcome all challenges. Just sign up at www.redhotpawn.com (it's free and takes five minutes) and start a new game against Reeves2668

It's not live chess, so once you've started a game, feel free to log out if I'm not online. Just check on it throughout the day, you'll soon be addicted, regardless of how long it's been since you've played.

Wow, now everybody knows how lame I am :)

Chess was a compulsory subject at my school (really!).
Well at least i found out how much i suck at it that way.
We learned all those fancy openings and stuff, but when i tried them on my 12 year old cousin, he ripped me off because he just acted randomly and without pattern. Man that sucks.
That said, if you're really good at it, i wouldn't say you're "lame" just because you enjoy chess.

Hmmm, perhaps your problem is that they all taught you to play in the same way, I don't think you become any good until you've designed your very own style. Wish my school had had Chess as a subject :D

It's not a matter of developing your very own style (everyone has some "built-in" style, they play aggressively, defensively, etc.), it's simply a matter of knowing how to play, as opposed to knowing a few moves.

Standard openings and other classic moves are there for a purpose - especially openings, since there's really not that many different ways to start a game *well*. But unless you know what your objective is and can react appropriately to the opponent, you'll wind up in trouble any time an opponent responds unpredictably to your opening. It doesn't much matter if the opponent is a 12-year-old that just doesn't know "better" or a 30-year-old chess champion.
