CD/R Problems

I just installed my new CD/R; it's a HP CDWriter+ 9100b. I put it in myself and it works great... for data CDs. It won't find Audio Cds and when I tried to burn something, the program tells me "Run time Error '6' Overflow". It then says it has made a critical error with <unknown> and closes the program. (GOD, I HATE WIN-ME!!!)

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with Windows. The program you're using to burn CD's probably just sucks.

I know it's not WinME, I just like complaining about it. Crappy OS...

Anyway, the thing that confuses me is the fact that it's the software that came with the CD/R. So that means either something isn't hooked up correctly, or that there's a conflict. I was hoping that someone might actually have some experience with CD/Rs so I could get some pointers or something. :(

And naturally, the software that you get for free is always of the highest quality. Check your drive's DMA and Disconnect settings I suppose. Is the drive mode correctly set in the BIOS (auto should work, and it should probably use PIO). And I'm confused. Can you read and burn only data cd's, or can't you read music cd's at all?

Oh yeah, and have you considered checking hp.com's tech support pages?

Also, Windows ME is exactly like the other Windowses, except it doesn't have a number in its name. Everyone just likes to hop on the sucking bandwagon.

Oh, and there's not a whole lot to hook up in the first place. Since it does something, the power is hooked up correctly. And since your BIOS and OS know the drive is there, the IDE cable is connected properly too. (You did attach it to an IDE, and not your RAID controller, right?)

Everything is connected right. The CD/R reads only data Cds and the program refuses to burn anything, it simply crashes. It doesn't even "see" audio Cds!

1) Yes, Win ME contains abundant suckage. MS hasn't released a really NEW "consumer" OS since Win 95. Win 2k is a "bidness" OS, and Win XP is still in the (supposedly near) future. Ev'things just basically patches/updates. Win 98 was actually more like Win 95 OSR 3, and Win ME can be thought of as Win 95 OSR 4. Innovation ain't MS's bag--but it don't hafta be when yer the "800 lb gorilla". Sheesh:(

2) While I'm ranting, HP sucks too (at least their support, and at least for printers).

3) Wish I had ideas for yer CD-R prob, but I don't. I was gonna suggest that maybe you had a "import session" problem, but to hear that you can't burn anything kinda stumps me, too. Maybe you could get yer money back & get a real CD-R unit (seein' as HP sucks and all...). I have an Iomega 12x10x32 unit, and a TEAC 4x4x32 one, and they work just fine--never any problems, unless it was something that was my fault. Do you have the industry standard ECDC s/w, or does HP throw in a different proggy for burning? ECDC has always done pretty well 4 me (yes, even the consumer "OEM" version they ship with drives).

I have one and I have no problems with. A friend of my was compilely a collection of his father's music (he was a musican) which I burn like 30 cd's for him with no problem. Did you use the "Test & Copy" option first? Make sure you are choosing the correct write option. There's one for Audio and one for Data.

So only the burning program fails to detect audio CDs, and it crashes when you make it do something? And you still don't think the burning program is somehow at fault?

The No-Prize goes to Kris for being the closest. I DLed HP's newer burning program, RecordNow 3.0, and suddenly everything works. She burns, reads Audio Cds an everything. :)
