cd drive down

howdy, last night as I was playing some games on my comp, my computer made a weird *pop* sound followed by a slowing whirring sound. this scared me so I immediately shut down my comp and let it sit overnight.

This morning I took out the cd drive and shook it a bit and it sounded like a meraca(sorry, dunno how to spell it). so I took apart the cd drive and discovered my cd that was in it had broken apart faster than Kilrah. I got as much of the cd out as possible( it rattles just a bit when shaken) but now Im afraid to put another cd in there(especially any of my wc cds) in case it too should explode. so, any advice? how much is a new cd drive goin for these days?

That's a rather strange problem. Test it with a blank CDR. If it breaks, you're out ten cents.

A new drive should be pretty darned cheap, though - I think I got an OEM DVD drive for WC Computer for something like fifty bucks... and that was two years ago.

A new drive (with burner) can usually be had for around $30-$50.

As for the disc exploding, well, it's common. It happens on the faster drivers (40x+) because they spin insanely fast.

It usually happens because of a prior defect on the disc itself, in the polycarbonate bulk. Something overstresses and it fractures into many little pieces.

Will it happen again? Depends on the CD. Will the drive be more likely to do it? Not really. It's not the drive's fault, it's the CD's fault for being somewhat defective in the first place. If you're scared, pick up a slower drive (DVD-ROM drives don't tend to spin discs as fast, and usually only read CDs around 30-40x).

ok, its just never happened to me then. too bad it had to be my lords of the realm 2 cd though, i was starting to enjoy it again! btw I found another cd drive in and old comp that was lying around so I put it in my comp and it works great. its a 24x so it hopefully wont happen again and on the plus side my wc3 works better than ever!
