Can't Open WCU Map Update for Privateer 3

Hey all,

I'm not sure this really needs "tech support", but it seemed like the best of the forums to post this under. Gavinfoxx recently pointed me out to a number of materials related to Privateer 3, including a CIC article from last June (https://www.wcnews.com/news/4265). One of the items on the list for download from that article is entitled "WCU Map Update for Privateer 3". As best I can tell, it's a Visio file (.vsd). I have been trying to get that file to open for the past day or two without success; this is after uploading the MS 2010 Visio Viewer and a few tools that should've allowed me to open up older Visio files. I keep getting the message "The file you are trying to open was created in an unsupported version of Microsoft Office Visio. For a list of supported versions, see the Microsoft Office Visio Viewer Help".

Anybody got any idea what might be going on? I suppose the file itself could be 15 years old, but the article was from last June so I would think the file would've been checked before it was made available as a download.

Definitely going to have to check out the rest of that article, though...I finally get the reference in Star*Soldier...

It's just for a really old version of Visio. The current version doesn't support documents that were made using the pre-Microsoft version of the software.

Okay, so what are my options going to be if I want to look at the file, besides hoping I can find a pre-MS version of the software?

There are some online services of questionable repute that you can use to upload the file and it will spit out a PDF. I don't have a link but you can do a google search for it. I know I managed to check out a few of these that way once upon a time.

Yeah, we hadn't seen this at the time. I suppose it's the only logical place to add a sector that needs to border the Empire... since we know that 'above' Gemini is unexplored.

This is also an older map than the Prophecy map if I'm not mistaken...I mean, I can see similarities between the two maps as far as system placement is concerned, but a lot of the jump routes are off. That, and there aren't that many names on the P3 map.

Well, anyway, thanks for helping me take a look at it. Mainly just curious.

It's just that it's based on the prototype version of the Prophecy map rather than the printed one. It's literally John Guentzel's 'preview' map that was posted to wingcommanderprophecy.com with a sector added below.

The file can be opened and edited the full version of Visio 2010 too.
One day I'd like to see the current map combined with the WC Online and the P3 maps combined. What would be cool. I'd love to see the files Pete used to put the map together to see if this could be done.
