hi there,

when i tried running WC3 with dosbox i got a lot of performance problems so i decides to try a boot disk but i were unable to get my sound driver started, so can anybody help ? i know i have to add a cmd line in the autoexec or config.sys on the boot disk, but what ? i have windows xp running with a creative audigy 2, i also heard of some nice boot-disc-creator-tools, any suggestions ?
anyway thanks for your help.

Sorry, but as far as I know there are no DOS-drivers for anything newer than the SB Live! series from Creative :( - At least I couldn't find any and I googled for hours... :\

There ARE drivers for the Audigy1. Which are are less then stable. They are supposed to also work with the Audigy2 with some tweaking and less stability. Haven't tried this route so far however.
For goethe's problem I'd suggest trying VDMSound. It should have better performance then Dosbox for you.

ok, well i tried VDMSOUND but now i´m unable to run/install the game, in case i exec wc3.exe i get the error

" not enough FILES available
Make sure the following line appears in your config.sys file:

FILES=25
"

did i do something wrong ?

Try this:

right-click wc3.exe, select "run with VDMS"
Select "Set up custom configuration"
Select "create new configuration from scratch"
Click 'Advanced' button
Select "DOS environment" tab
Set checkmark in "Additional options" box
Add Line "FILES=40" in Config.sys textbox
[For good measure: Switch to 'Compatibility' tab and select "low level CD-ROM support"]
Click OK
Click Next
Click Finish

ok, i just did that and it even worked ( after i downloaded a newer vdmsound version, which version is the most recent anyway ? i found version 2.10 beta, is that up to date?)
BUT the game runs very slow without any sound. When i tried to run a setup i failed, when i use vdmsound the game starts right away and i didn't find any other setup command, so i guess there is no sound because i could not set up the game. In case i run wc3.exe from cd-drive the setup won't start either.
i guess i need still some advice, i'm all ears.

 There are? Can you give me a link pls. :)
Nevermind. Just found some here:
http://forums.sudhian.com/messageview.cfm?catid=75&threadid=43268&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=
But the info-text doesn't sound that promising. Guess I'll try them anyway - maybe.
What makes me wonder is, that I just did a quick google-search and found them. But when doing so the last time, I only read: "There are no DOS drivers blablabla" - Oh well, maybe I only searched at creative and that's why ^^ can't remember, quite some time ago.

To VDMS: I tried that as well, and didn't hear any sounds either, only music, I think (quizte some time ago)

finally, i were able to make some progress,
well i used dosbox to install wc3 on my harddrive, then i exited dosbox and copied all files from my wc3 cd into the install directory without overwriting "old" files.
then i made a vmds shortcut of wc3.exe and did like criticalmass told me:

right-click wc3.exe, select "run with VDMS"
Select "Set up custom configuration"
Select "create new configuration from scratch"
Click 'Advanced' button
Select "DOS environment" tab
Set checkmark in "Additional options" box
Add Line "FILES=40" in Config.sys textbox

after that i were able to start wc3, the speed of the videos is OK ( much better than dosbox) and there is just a little noise that keeps "clicking" all the time, but i think i can live with it. My problem NOW is my joystick, it jumps to the upper left corner and i can't move it from there, i tried calibrating the joystick in windows as well as the wc3joy.exe update/fix, unfortunately i can't reach the wc3 calibration because the game starts right away and doesn't allow me to calibrate the joystick and in game i can't because the joystick is stuck in the upper left corner :(
i also tried ctrl+alt+j but there is no calibration menu.
anybody there with a similar problem ?

i played a mission without joystick and the game runs very smooth with vmds.
