BDay Armada/PG Games

Rear Admiral
Well I would certainly would like to be playing WC Armada and Proving Grounds during the celebrations. Anyone else? Just as a thought, we could meet in a separate channel so any discussion/help armada related chat wont interfere with the Q&Aing that will go on.

Here are my directions for playing Armada and PG over the internet with Dosbox 0.73

Directions

1.Download Dosbox 0.73. It is best to use a frontend like DFend-Reloaded or DosBox Game Launcher. (Though it should be noted, at this point you would have to use a beta version of DFend-Reloaded to get all the DB 0.73 options or put them in yourself) but a never the less, it makes configuration A LOT easier.

2. Install Armada in a folder (preferably in a folder in your dosbox folder though It doesn't matter) and install joystick with thrustmaster, if you have a hat switch that is, otherwise go without it.

3. In your dosbox.conf file, set: core=dynamic, cycles=15000, (This is best for my laptop your computer may differ) joysticktype=fcs (This enables Thrustmaster emulation in Dosbox), timed=false, and anything else you might desire.

(You will have calibration problems in Armada and PG if it is set timed=true and cycles=max, auto ) (HCl's patched armada.exe and pg.exe is no longer needed with Dosbox 0.73)

4. To play Internet with Armada, Download netbios_binary.zip from the first post on this thread, and place NETBIOS.exe and dll files directly in your dosbox folder. (DO NOT copy dosbox.exe from this folder as it is older and unneeded.)
(Note: PG will not need NetBios.exe)

5. If you want to host, you need to configure your router to forward port 213. It differs from router to router so If you don't know how to do it, I'd check your user's manual.

6. In the dosbox.conf file set IPX=true
On the very bottom of the file, (after [autoexe]) or in dosbox itself type...
mount c [Armada folder dir]
mount b [Dosbox folder dir]*
ipxnet startserver 213 (your forwarded port) OR ipxnet connect [IP adress] (Depending if you are client or host, and the host must be up first as it must connect BEFORE netbios is launched or netbios will change the ip!)
b:*
NetBios.exe*
c:
armada.exe or pg.exe
exit (not needed but is good to be put in conf files as it saves you the hassle of closing dosbox when quitting)

(* = only needed for armada.conf not pg.conf)

That's it, start dosbox!

Be sure to press alt-o to calibrate your joystick and if you cant press the joy1 button because your cursor is all over the place press alt-1

So, off the bat is anyone interested? I realize there is a lot going on what with the movie viewing and Standoff being released.

I'm sure people will want to sneak some games in...whether it be Armada, Arena, or WCP.

Maybe this year I can finally start kicking Pete's ass in WCP since now I have a joystick too :p

Here's a number of things I'm not very experienced with, but I'd be willing to give this a try, if it's possible. The question is indeed, is this possible with my current stone age conditions?

That would be about 10 years old win98 PC with a 56 dialup. Do you think I have any chances or shall I wait till I get a computer made on this century?

Hmm I'd be more then happy to give it a try with you if you want. Only dosbox is a little demanding resource wise, so It may be difficult getting the game to run at full speed. You would have to play with the cycle count among other things. But there is no reason you cant play with it, if you have the time. But I wouldn't expect great results.

I hadn't tried dosbox on that PC before (as it runs dos games fine in dos mode); seems WCA is just too much. WC1 is playable, but...

I'll get back if I can come up with something, or bother to move the internal modem on my (slightly) newer PC or indeed get a decent (or any) internet on that.
I'm an underachiever

Oh, and here's a (stupid?) question: would it be possible for me to play through DOS mode?
I'm not familiar with this IPX stuff and haven't ever had an internet connection in DOS.

Yeah if it runs in dos mode then there is no way Dosbox would be enough. :D I wont be able to play with you on actual hardware, as none of my computers are old dos machines nor do I have any of the necessary hardware such as an old modem. :( Also I really cant think of a way to get dosbox to communicate to an actual machine. That IPX and Modem stuff with dosbox is simply emulated and then broadcast on modern protocols to an IP connection over the internet.

HAL9000 would definitely know more but I haven't seen him here in a Year. He is on the dosbox forums a lot though.

EDIT

There is a modem emulation option in dosbox and it simply asks for an IRQ number and a port, I take it to be a port on my router. Perhaps it is possible for us to connect if you dialed on to my computer but I really don't know to much about it. Ive never actually worked with such ancient technology. I've sometimes used the nullmodem setting which behaves like I said before, but that is it.
