You probably pushed 's' on accident. Just push it again and your shields will come back up. 'Shift S' will take them down even lower. If that doesn't help you probably have a weak or damaged reactor, so either upgrade that or repair it.

But there is no ship buying screen in the origional Privateer or Gemni Gold. The Remake has one I know, but I assume the person who was asking would have noticed if he were playing the Remake.

But then again, you don't get the sales pitch until you've got enough money to purchase the ship. Makes it sort of hard to make money earning goals in your head while you play.
