When the Kilrathi first went to war, the Ralari-Class Destroyer was the most modern capital ship in their arsenal. By the mid-2650s the fleet would include more than three thousand of the destroyers, using them as planetary assault ships, convoy escorts and line warships. Variants of the Ralari include an armored command and control ship for co-ordinating amphibious landings and a ship-to-planet missile laden "strategic bomber".

The hardy destroyers have also served in an unexpected capacity: flying the colors of the Terran Confederation Space Navy. Their superior bombardment capabilities has lead to the pressing of captured Ralari into Confederation service. A Ralari captured while attempting to raid the Port Hedland System was immediately put into service during the siege of Kurasawa; unfortunately, the destroyer did not survive the battle.

Commodore Christopher Blair is credited with nine confirmed Ralari kills while serving on the TCS Tiger's Claw (including four during the Vega Campaign, two during Operation Thor's Hammer and three during Operation Crusade). Major Pitzak Puzaki, of the TCS Eagle's Talon, destroyed two of the destroyers during the defense of Hubble's Star and Hell's Kitchen.

Notable Ralari include the KIS Rathtak, which survived an attack by Tiger's Claw pilots in early 2654. Noted pilots Captain R.A. Skinner and Lieutenant Larry Dibbles were killed during the strike.

The Ralari-class destroyer represents the Kilrathi's sole known attempt at a warship with no fighter complement. Ralari-class ships are used for fleet defense, planetary assault and orbital defense. They predate the current conflict, but from their engineering it is believed that they are a relatively recent innovation for the Kilrathi. A Ralari's engines are extremely efficient, and it has above average speed and maneuverability for a ship its size. All Kilrathi task groups and escorted convoys include Ralari-class destroyers. Several thousand have been identified, and many intact specimens have been taken.

The Ralari holds a complement of about 150 officers and crew, plus a small unit of up to 50 warriors for use in marine operations. Although it doesn't have a fighter deck, a Ralari's standard complement includes three large transport shuttles, each capable of holding up to 100 armed warriors and their equipment. In invasion operations, they are often encountered in the presence of troop transports, with the Ralari acting as command and control for the landing operation.

The Ralari is also effective as a strategic bomber, and much of its cargo space is often devoted to ship-to-planet missile storage. Torpedoes, plus a remarkable heavy armament for a ship of its size, make it one of the most deadly Kilrathi vessels in ship-to-ship combat.
