The F-97 Wraith was a medium fighter fielded by the Terran Confederation in the Terran-Kilrathi War.
The Wraith was designed and developed by Terran Tech Laboratories in New York during the later years of the war against the Kilrathi. Designed as a medium fighter, it was developed with a standard payload built on a chassis that fulfilled its intended purpose as a capable all-purpose starfighter.
The most remarkable innovation of the Wraith was its speed. At the time of its introduction in the 2660s, it was reputedly the fastest starfighter in galactic history. It was also designed alongside the Leech Missile and the Reaper Cannon, both of which were designed specifically for usage by the Wraith during development.
As the Wraith proceeded with the final stages of development, the Confederation Space Naval Academy's CyberSchool trained prospective pilots for service in the Wraith in the holographic simulators. The first Wraiths flew in 2667, and entered active service in 2669.
One notable Wraith squadron was that stationed on the TCS Lexington, a carrier sent to destroy Kilrah in 2669. They proved a worthy opponent against the Kilrathi Shok'lars, but disappeared with the Lexington during the mission and were never heard from again.
Wraiths became less common by 2681 as new starfighters came to dominate the frontlines. In 2669, the Wraith lost its speed record to the F-27 Arrow V.
