===History of the List=== | |||
The ''Wing Commander'' Ships List was created by the request of the ''Secret Ops'' team during the development of that game. It is the same list cited by Peter Telep in the acknowledgements of the ''Wing Commander'' movie novel. The original version attempted to fill in gaps in the ''Wing Commander'' universe wherever reasonable. While this was necessary for its original purpose, it has over time rendered the original document obsolete as a reference source for fan projects, fan fiction and future ''Wing Commander'' products. The new version seeks to leave all unspecified data clearly marked. The original ships list can be found archived for posterity at [https://www.wcnews.com/articles/art22.shtml https://www.wcnews.com/articles/art22.shtml] | The ''Wing Commander'' Ships List was created by the request of the ''Secret Ops'' team during the development of that game. Notes
Interpreting the List
- Ship names are ordered alphabetically by faction.
- Where it is known that two or more ships share the same class but that their formal designation is unknown, the list classifies them as being the type of whichever ship appears first alphabetically. (Ex., the TCS Sheffield is listed as being a Coventry-type destroyer.)
- When issues arise about a ships specific classification, citations are listed under the 'class ship'. (Ex., the reasoning behind the Agincourt (II)-type being listed as heavy cruiser is noted under TCS Agincourt (II) rather than TCS Ajax.) When a ship has multiple classifications, these are also listed together under the class ship and then only where appropriate in individual examples.
- Citations are not necessarily the only place in the continuity which a ship appears; they are only the instance that best classifies a ship.
History of the List
The Wing Commander Ships List was created by the request of the Secret Ops team during the development of that game. It is the same list cited by Peter Telep in the acknowledgements of the Wing Commander movie novel. The original version attempted to fill in gaps in the Wing Commander universe wherever reasonable. While this was necessary for its original purpose, it has over time rendered the original document obsolete as a reference source for fan projects, fan fiction and future Wing Commander products. The new version seeks to leave all unspecified data clearly marked. The original ships list can be found archived for posterity at https://www.wcnews.com/articles/art22.shtml

Footnotes
1The TCS Ally is either a Bengal-class strike carrier or a Concordia-class super cruiser. Appears in background dialogue of the movie, spelling is approximate.
2The TCS Avalon is either a Bengal-class strike carrier or a Concordia-class super cruiser. Appears in background dialogue of the movie, spelling is approximate.
3The TCS Barracuda is either a Bengal-class strike carrier or a Concordia-class super cruiser. Appears in background dialogue of the movie, spelling is approximate.
4PS refers to a "Bengal-class cruiser" (p.35)
5Appears in background dialogue of the movie, spelling is approximate.
6The TCS Cimino appears only in the Midway's onboard simulator.
7The WCMN refers to the TCS Concordia (II) as a "Confederation-class carrier" (p.8)
8Many sources refer to the Concordia only as 'carrier'. ER, p.66: "His idea of a carrier was more on the lines of the Concordia...". Fleet Action refers to her as a 'heavy carrier. FA, p.36: "… you would be secure in your heavy carrier…"
9WC3 Mission Alcor 2 includes a Coventry-type destroyer labeled "Frigate". Note that the actual class is probably not Coventry, as the TCS Coventry is said to be more modern than the TCS Sheffield. This document refers to the first ship listed alphabetically when classifying by type.
10Appears in background dialogue of the movie, spelling is approximate.
11“Dilligent” is probably a misspelling of “Diligent”.
12ER treats (but does not refer to) the TCS Gettysburg (II) as a fleet carrier rather than a cruiser.
13In the SFC/SNES port of The Secret Missions, the TCS Gwenhyvar is called a Venture-class corvette in this conversation. She appears as a Venture in the game as well, as the limited space for graphics meant replacing the Exeter for the 'new' Venture.
14This document uses "quick strike heavy cruiser" as the Hades-class’ formal designation, per the New Confed Ship Online document. The specifications in the WCSO fiction and the WCAPG manual refer to her as a "Strike Cruiser", SecretOps.com refers to her as a "Quick Strike Cruiser" and WCAPG’s box copy refers to her as a "'Quick Strike' carrier".
15Various sources refer to the Intrepid as a carrier. Specifically, the WC4 script: "The Intrepid -- an old destroyer recently converted to carrier -- has just concluded a terrible clash with Confederation fighters."
16Appears in background dialogue of the movie, spelling is approximate.
17There is continued debate as to whether or not the TCS Johann actually exists, as the ship in question turns out to be the TCS Gwenhyvar.
18In the SFC/SNES port of The Secret Missions, the TCS Johann is called a Venture-class corvette in this conversation.
19The TCS Kobi is either a Bengal-class strike carrier or a Concordia-class super cruiser. “Kobi” is probably a misspelling (based on pronunciation) of “Kobe”.
20The TCS Flagstone is either a Bengal-class strike carrier or a Concordia-class super cruiser.
