CAP stands for Combat Air Patrol. Combat Air Patrol can be an offensive or defensive force of fighters used in a space superiority or fleet defense role.
There are several variations of the classic Combat Air Patrol.
- FORCAP (Forward Combat Air Patrol)
- A fighter sweep ahead of advancing forces
- TARCAP (Targeted Combat Air Patrol)
- Air Superiority Mission in a specific area
- BARCAP (Barrier Combat Air Patrol, or blockade)
- Blockade line fighter support and patrol
