The Durango was originally designed as a Heavy Destroyer with the traditional purpose of providing heavy firepower for Confederation fleets against enemy warships and to serve as escorts for larger vessels. They were fairly fast and maneuverable for their size and thus could evade slower vessels easily. Their design could be customized to serve other purposes, notably as fleet carriers if need be.

In time, however, they became increasingly obsolete in the face of newer, far superior warships, and by the end of 2663 had been largely phased out of Confederation service. The most notable of these was the TCS Delphi, which continued its service as the BWS Intrepid.

Even after the end of the War in 2669, Durangos remained active on the frontier. By 2673, several Durangos, including the BWS Intrepid and the BWS Tango had been reconfigured as light carriers for the Union of Border Worlds, which lacked the industrial capacity to produce its own carriers. During the Border Worlds Conflict in 2673, the BWS Intrepid spearheaded the Union's effort to combat Terran mercenaries who sought to instigate war between them and the Terran Confederation. The Intrepid suffered massive personnel and material losses during its campaign, but proved to be a vital asset to the Union's campaign. The vessel eventually came under the command of former Terran officers Captain William Eisen and Colonel Christopher Blair, who commanded the Intrepid as they fought against the disloyal Terran forces. The Intrepid eventually identified the mercenaries as operatives of the illegal Black Lance faction, and it eventually exposed the conspiracy to the Confederation Assembly, preventing all-out war on the frontier.
A second example of this class, the BWS Tango was active during operations in Speradon to capture critical war materials in the campaign against the elusive Black Lance.

The Intrepid was later refitted as a training ship for the Terran Confederation.

Another notable Durango, the BWS Tango, took part in the Union's offensive actions in the Speradon System, where it assisted in the capture of Confederation weapons and starships for use by the Union.

The Durango-class heavy destroyer was a class of Heavy Destroyers that once saw extensive service with the Terran Confederation. Surviving examples now serve with the Union of Border Worlds.

The Durango was a pre-Kilrathi War design that saw action against the Kilrathi during the earlier years of the Terran-Kilrathi War. In time, however, they became increasingly dated in the face of newer, superior warships, and by 2663 were considered obsolete. However, at least one Durango continued to serve in the Confederation Outer Worlds Fleet. The most notable of these was the TCS Delphi, which continued its service in the Union of Border Worlds Militia as the BWS Intrepid.

During the Border Worlds Conflict in 2673, the BWS Intrepid spearheaded the Union's effort to combat the Black Lance, who sought to instigate war between the Union and the Terran Confederation. It was the crew and the commanders of the Intrepid who would ultimate identify the Black Lance as the true culprit of the conflict and expose its illegal activities to the Confederation Assembly, thus preventing a potential full-scale war.

A second example of this class, the BWS Tango was active during operations in Speradon to capture critical war materials in the campaign against the elusive Black Lance.
