Hyperion is a star system in the outermost regions of the Vega Sector. As of 2669, it was under the control of the Kilrathi Empire.

Hyperion is a backwater system with only a minimal population and an unknown number of planets. It possessed little strategic value in the Terran-Kilrathi War, and was largely ignored for that period of time. It hosted at least one planet, but it was lifeless, craggy, and tectonically unstable, and therefore unpopulated.

Hyperion came to the Terran Confederation's attention during the year 2669 when it was preparing to launch the Temblor Bomb against the Kilrathi homeworld of Kilrah. The Temblor Bomb was designed to destroy a planet by destabilizing its tectonic makeup, which would cause a destructive super earthquake that would rip the planet apart. Kilrah was known to be tectonically unstable, but the bomb's effectiveness had to be tested. It was decided that the bomb would be tested on the planet Hyperion, due to its instability and lack of population.

The TCS Victory arrived in this system to conduct the test while the Confederation occupied the Kilrathi-controlled Freya System. Colonel Christopher Blair, flying a modified F-103 Excalibur heavy fighter, delivered the bomb to Hyperion and proceeded to launch the weapon into the target fault line. Blair then cleared the planet just as the bomb detonated deep within the surface, causing the predicted earthquake that completely destroyed the planet. With the success of this test, the Terrans prepared for a major strike on Kilrah.
