Asteroids are small, rocky planetoids which orbit many star systems and can present a hazard to navigation. Asteroid fields have a wide range of densities and their component asteroids vary greatly in mass and velocity.
It is common for pilots of small craft to fly a direct route through thick fields of asteroids in order to reach their destination quickly, to avoid encounters with enemies and to catch their opponents by surprise.
