He was rescued by Kilrathi defector Ralgha nar Hhallas during the battle for control over the planet, and he and Ralgha became close comrades from then on. It was Ross who suggested the callsign "Hobbes" to Ralgha, as he considered him to be very wise, just as was the philosopher he was named for.
