Get Your WC4 DVD On With Lazy Game Reviews
It's turning out to be a great week for classic game channels on YouTube! Lazy Game Reviews has posted a very in-depth profile of the Creative Labs Encore DXR2 DVD-ROM kit. He does a great job setting the stage for just how cool this was in 1997 and covers every inch of the box and its contents. It's remarkably satisfying to see him go through the hardware and software installation process. He tries out Claw and then finally the highly coveted DVD version of Wing Commander 4. If you make it all the way to the WC4 intro cinematic, part way through there's a special surprise in store. Enjoy! Thanks to Andy Aldrich and Megan Sumner for the heads up!
Installing a Creative Encore DVD-ROM! Back in 1997 DVD tech was an huge step up from CDs. And the setup was a bit more involved than just plopping in a drive -- you needed an MPEG-2 card like the DXR2!Of course, now you can enjoy the high quality video of this edition of WC4 for just $5.99 at GOG, but back in the day, this was an expensive and exclusive game. LOAF had this to add:
That sure brings back memories. I remember working all summer that year at the Maryland School for the Blind's summer camp... and saving every dollar that was supposed to be for food and necessities so I could buy that DXr2 kit when I got home. Most expensive computer upgrade I'd ever bought myself at the time!
