Profiling Female Characters In Gaming: Spirit
WomenGamers.com features a variety of news and articles that takes a look at the position of female characters in the video game industry. Heart of the Tiger recently noticed that they have a big profile on our own Mariko "Spirit" Tanaka from Wing Commander 1 & 2. In this particular article they give a decent summary of her background and then launch into analyzing her different traits. It's a fun article, though they choose some slightly unflattering shots of her. I'd have gone with a WC2 kimono picture instead of a WC1 manly flight suit rear-shot. They rate her well on looks, attitude, intelligence, stance, voice, scripting and marketing. You come across various plot devices and story arcs, centering around love, betrayal and the need to win against the Kilrathi. When your commanding officer says good-bye to all the characters before one mission, in case they don't come back, it adds to the game and the personality of the characters. When a character dies, it stings bad. And the script is very much character driven. Throughout the course of the game, you learn of your wingmen's fears and uncertainties of the war, their hopes and dreams and their personal lives. That pretty much sums up all of Wing Commander there. You can find the article here. See if you agree with it. Although it's quite a positive character analysis, I think a couple items might be a bit off.
