Wcdx - Kilrathi Saga for modern Windows

Interesting; I may have to take a look at that. Eventually. I am once again completely swamped with other stuff.

Incidentally, if anyone out there is interested in contributing to wcdx, please let me know. The project is open-source for a reason...
a thread at vogons about wcdx would be nice too, there are patch threads there for many games, peixoto's patches are hosted there too.

also good luck with reforged

Hi,
My English is bad, sorry.
We translate the add-ons in French of the game Wing Commander 2 Frenc version.
We have two problem:
1) We would like subtitles and voices during videos and others.
We have no problem for basic game Wing Commander 2. We modified wc2.cfg file. But, it does not work for add-ons (SO1 and SO2).
2) Add-ons do not recognize font (FONTS.FNT). We can not write French letters (à, â, é, è, ç, etc.)
I did research on internet and found your topic.
I hope you can help us, thank you.
Regards.

Hi @Hrvg; if you're looking to modify the DOS versions, check out @UnnamedCharacter's excellent work on the Wing Commander Toolbox. You may be able to find someone on that thread who can help you. If you're relying on wcdx, then be advised that I haven't done any work on SO1 or SO2 yet (and my work on wcdx has unfortunately stalled for the last few years).

how long stinger until you can resume with wcdx?
it seems that wcdx doesn't open on dgvoodoo2 newest dx9 wrapper.

there i san entire topic abou the newst builds on vogos forums, i think dege would help with the game speed problems.

I don't have a good answer for you. I don't have a lot of free time on my hands, and when I do, I'm usually inclined to unwind with more passive pursuits. It does bug me that I haven't finished this, but I also want to finally spend some time playing Kerbal Space Program, for instance.

@Stinger
Thank you so much for this. I have always preferred the KS versions and find the DOSBox ones completely unplayable with the framerate issues. It's so great to finally be able to play these games again, with the better music to boot!

I wanted to know if it would be possible to reinsert the debug cheats that were for some reason removed from the KS versions (ALT+DEL destroy targeted enemy, etc). I'm not sure if this is something you could tweak, and I'm also not sure why they left in invincibility but took out the others? I know its not a feature anyone is asking for and probably looked down upon, but it is something the DOS versions have that KS doesn't and I do miss it on some of the horrendously balanced escort missions that really come down to sheer luck/randomness on if you get through them.

I'm not sure if something like this is in your realm, but I figured I would ask in case it just happened to be a quick fix.

I'm not at home right now and can't check directly, but I think those cheats may still work; they just have to be activated in a different way. I don't remember the details off-hand.

All the research I've done says they disabled them in the KS version and only the invincibility works. I'm able to copy my save over to the DOS version and use them that way, but this doesn't work for SM2 because the DOS version uses a different save file for it.

EDIT: Turns out I can just transfer the KS save to SM2 using the Transfer utility, then rename the save file to CRUSADE and the DOS version will accept it.

Yeah, I think if you go back and find our old 1996-1997 posts, we thought the command line cheats were disabled, but then we eventually figured out how to turn them on. Go into Wingcmdr.cfg and WC2.cfg and put Origin -k -b in there: https://www.wcnews.com/cheats.shtml#kilrathisaga

That works for invincibility and keeps your name from being changed to CHEATER, but the Alt+DEL target destroy still doesn't work. The "-k" is the invincibility flag and it's still in there (you can put in just "-k" into the CFG file and it will give you invincibility), but the "Origin" debug mode tag doesn't do anything. Not sure if it was removed completely or if it was just switched off for some reason.

Hoping it's something @Stinger can see with his tools, like if it's making a call when you push Alt+DEL with "Origin" in there to some method that got removed or something.

Yeah, but the controls suck, I want my good old Mac Version be ported or something. Would pay money but alas, it is no use.
Would do it myself if assets and source code would be available (and usable), but no luck there either.

@ghost wolves: Sorry for the wait, but I found the answer you're looking for. First, you need to enable cheats; if you're using wcdx, you can do this in regedit by navigating to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Origin Systems\WC: Kilrathi Saga and setting the Cheater value to 1. That is equivalent to launching the game in the old days with Origin -k -b. (You can also do this by modifying WINGCMDR.CFG).

Next, you need to create an empty file in your WC1 game directory called ctrl.del. (It should be alongside the game executable, not in the GAMEDAT directory.) Without this file present, the cheat is disabled.

Finally, I was right; the cheat's key mapping changed. It's now CTRL-DEL, as alluded to by the file name.

Interesting. What about the Alt-Insert cheat that kills an entire wing or all enemies on radar? I can't check it myself since I don't have access to a CD drive at the moment.

Apologies for the necro-reply, but I used sheepshaver and basilisk a few years ago to emulate a system 7 machine and play SWC for the Mac on the pc. One of them worked better than the other (i forget which) and obviously you had to emulate the entire system to get it running, but it wasn't impossible, just a bit long winded!
