The cats can't have this many ships!

You know, after playing through Episode 5 for the sake of recording (and also taking notes for the Guide), I'm beginning to agree with Popsicle.

Specifically, what they can't have this many of is Snakeir-class carriers. Thrakhath's invasion plan laid out in Fleet Action calls for the Fifth and Second fleets of the Claw, with five Hakagas and four Snakeirs, to advance along the axis which Tolwyn places Third Fleet in front of. Of these four Snakeirs, if you're good and lucky enough, you can destroy one in Warsaw, two in Sirius, and quite possibly three in Sol, which is rather more than the cats set out with.

Is the assumption that if you managed to destroy the Hakaga and both Snakeirs in Sirius that you're too good at this game and deserve to get the harder versions of the missions in Episode 5, so thus the cats are allowed to bring two carriers up from reserves?

I recall an explanation from before that, in Fleet Action, two Snakeirs disengage to escort an injured Hakaga back to Kilrathi space, so if you destroy the Hakaga, those two Snakeirs are present later on in the game. Though I'm not sure if that reconciles the numbers or not (Fleet Action is one of the few WC novels I haven't read yet).

That's certainly what's going on - unfortunately, the game doesn't check to see if you also destroyed the two Snakeirs in the mission where you can destroy the Hakaga, so if you get a clean sweep you end up facing the carriers you already destroyed in Sirius again in Sol.

If your calculations are right, we're off by a mere one Snakeir. While we certainly stuck pretty close to the book, it certainly is possible we messed up somewhere along the way. Blame it on the Kilrathi throwing one more Snakeir into the strike force at the last second :p.

The two extra Snakeirs you see in Sol are, as Nomad Terror said, the ships that would have escorted that Hakaga if you had only damaged it. Incidentally, while you might think that makes life much easier, and that it's therefore better to only damage the Hakaga, in fact this makes final victory very difficult to achieve, almost guaranteeing the middle ending.

No, there's six Snakeirs total, which is two too many - I've been keeping count. You can destroy one in Lashing Out, two in Torpedo Delivery, one (assuming you got the Hakaga in Torpedo Delivery) in Wild Weasel, one in Sacrifice, and if you do all of that there'll still be one left in Big Damn Ending. Let's assume they withdrew the remnants of the Third Fleet of the Claw from the Landreich after Kruger messed them up a bit and used that to reinforce the main push after the TCN did better than expected in Warsaw, I think those numbers square then.

Though I'm not sure if that reconciles the numbers or not (Fleet Action is one of the few WC novels I haven't read yet).

Just so you know...a digital version of FA is available...with the WC3 GOG release! It's one of the extras we managed to get into the package before they put it out for sale. :D
