There are a lot of MP3s that are perfectly legal, depending on the source. The music industry tried to lobby to have them illegalized but didn't really succeed. There are limitations and certain stipulations.

DH: Agreed, but I think it's safe to assume that the majority of the MP3s most of us have on our hard drives are illegal. Me included
