Game freezes upon loading with squares of different colors appearing on the screen.

Tried the following:
- most of the possible modes, including removing sound and minimizing quality fullscreen/windowed.
- installed latest catalist driver 4.8 for win2000

System:
PIII 800mhz
384 Mb RAM pc133
Rosewill Radeon 9600XT 128mb

Recently defragged HD with 7GB free space on that partition.
(Installed in the default specified directory)

I want to play this lovely game again. Please Help. Thank you.

that's normal operation...you need to wait about 3 minutes for a system of your class for it to finish loading...then a splashscreen will startup

with such a video card make *sure* you have the latest drivers from ati.com (I thought they released 5.1 or 5.2 though I test normally with 4.9 or 4.11 4.10 is horribly buggy)

it's building BSP trees the first time

ummm errr yeah ^_^
you were right. that seems to be normal operation.

perhaps a line of text can be added to the manual warning about the initial delay during which that effect appears? less trouble from impatient people who quickly close the seemingly frozen program... =)

that's why the mac has the spinney beachball and bouncing stiletto before the splashscreen comes up...it mesmerizes users so they don't kill it while it loads
