Since i can't mail the moderators abou this, i will ask it this way. I'm pretty impressed by this message board, and i want to start my own on my site.

Can i use a message board like this one ? is it free ? were can i sign up ?

I'd like it when you don't have to pay for it, but when i do can someone give a suggestion about a free one ? Already tried bord.com, but there updating there software... :(

Why can't you mail the moderators <G>? We're people too...

If you want this specific board, you have to pay for it -- around 200 dollars plus 70 a year after two years for subscription service, IIRC. There are lots of crappy free boards, though... like BOARD POWER!

BOARD POWAR!

This board is $160 for an owned license. That means you can use it forever ever. The $160 includes one year of upgrades. After that, it's $35 for another year of upgrades.

There's also Ultimate Bulletin Board, which we used to use. I believe it's gotten a bit more expensive, and it's not as fast. But it's still pretty good if you can't run a mySQL database on your server.

If you want a free board, there are free versions of both the Ultimate Bulletin Board and vBulletin. AFAIK neither allows user registrations, and they're probably more limited in ways off functionality and such. You could also go for and "ezboard". You don't run ezboard on your own server, so you don't have to worry about systerm requirements or the installation. And it sorta looks like UBB and VB too. (But I think they're gonna start charging soon too).

It is the sort of question you can ask us at chatzone@. Questions like "I can't run Privateer!" or "Where can I buy Kilrathi Saga", however, are not. And still they come.

Just wondering Kris... who's paying for this?

The CIC staff does... just like they pay for the domain, webspace and bandwidth.

What exactly do you want a board for?

TC

From their own pockets... wow! I guess we all have to thank Kris, Crid, Hades... for their generosity... :)

Did I miss anyone? ;)

You missed a few people...

The CIC staff's bosses at their various jobs pay them.

TC

So let me get this straight... The CIC is run with no ads (yay!) by some dedicated WC fans, forking out dough out of their own pockets, and they even have enough leftover to support crius.net! I'm impressed, I always thought CIC had some official standing with Origin.

Used to be on OSI servers. It isn't anymore, though. Setting up Crius was actually cheaper than having the extra bandwidth of the CZ on their http://www.wcnews.com account, as I understand it.

TC

Origin doesn't *have* servers anymore.

But we have a good working relationship with their PR people.

At least, if they still have PR people:)

Lets just say I won't be purchasing any gold-coated hot-dogs for quite a while...

... or, any regular hot-dogs.

Seriously, running a high-bandwith, non-profit advertisement-free website is much more expensive than you think. :)

Yeah, especially because of the "non-profit advertisement-free" part... ;)

Something pops up saying "mail only for administrative stuff"...

That popup message is just to discourage the general idiots from mailing us with crap which in no way relates to the chatzone. Like "when is next wc game be coming??? all your wc is belong to us! lolololol!!"

Unfortunately it doesn't work because it seems the afore mentioned "general idiots" don't know how to read.
