Rear Admiral
Ok everyone, tell us why you love the Hornet from wc1. I actually thought it was the worst confed fighter in the game. The Hornet’s speed and maneuverability didn’t seem to make up for its lack of shields, armor and fire power, but I’m sure it will always seem special to me because it was the very first wing commander fighter I ever flew.

Well, it had a nice cockpit... And if you could live with having to spend ages bringing down anything above a Krant, it was certainly fun to fly.

And we really don't need as many "likes" threads as we had "gripes" threads. ;)

The hornet gave me total freedom of maneuverability and speed, and unlike the rapier, forced me to use them. You could avoid every shot thrown at you- and you had better do it! The laser cannons made battles last a decent length of time. I don't like it for a mission where something has to survive, but it's fun to fight through with the hornet in any other situation.

If you're defending anything other then a carrier you're in deep trouble, and burning capships takes forever. For any non-escort, non-anti-capship duties it's a lot of fun.

You must've forgotten the "DO NOT ROAST THE THREE FRALTHI!!!!" mission. That one is satisfying just BECAUSE how durable they are against the hornet.

1) It's fast.
2) It's very manoeuvrable.
3) Its guns recharge quickly.
4) It is extremely good at dodging.
5) In fact, it is so good at dodging that saving AB Fuel shouldn't be much of a problem.

The WC1 Hornet is one of my favorite light fighters, along with the WC2 Super Ferret.

Unless you're addicted to afterburners- I usually at least tap them to make sure I stay out of harms way. It's a habit, but I almost never run out, and never have in the hornet. But I do like knowing I can shoot at any time for almost as long as I want if possible. Raptor and Rapier didn't have that.

I certainly have a soft spot for the Hornet. Wish we flew it more in WC1, actually.

I suppose the only critique I have is missile loadout. Not sure dumbfires are the way to go for a light fighter. I see dumbfires more as unguided rockets, almost better for strike missions. IMO, light fighters should have good tracking missiles for intense melee action.

I guess that's not really a mark against the hornet per se, just what my idea of which weapons a light fighter should fly into battle with...

Well, the Rapier is quite good at dodging too, but not nearly as much as the Hornet, so you can indeed run out of AB Fuel if you're facing many tough foes (like Hhriss).

As for the Raptor, it's fast and pretty manoeuvrable for a Heavy fighter, but its biggest problem is probably the fact that's it's pretty bad at dodging (though not as much as the Scimitar). So it's likely to need quite a bit of AB Fuel, especially against Gratha, Jalthi, and Rapiers (yes, I'm thinking of Jotunheim 3, where AB fuel is really a problem if you want to destroy everything).

I never liked the Hornet's cockpit -- it always felt too 'wide' to me (and doubly so, on a PSP.)

Hehe I have to give that one to you. I did a side by side comparison and I was like... you have to be kidding me. Plus I wasn't too crazy about the PSP version being a mod of the SNES version

On anti-capship missions it's a good idea to save your dumbfires to use on the capships--two dumbfires will go a long way toward killing even a Fralthi.

I love the little design. Launching on a three-point patrol in good 'ole Enyo System for the first time will remain one of my most vivid WC memories.

I like the overall design, just not the cockpit. The only fighter design i really despised was the Raptor. Damn thing was huge!
