I picked up the 1st and only season of the orginal Battlestar Galactica on DVD a few weeks ago because i remembered bits from when i was younger and thought it would be interesting. I really enjoy it, i wish now that the show had kept going instead of being pulled after only one season. The stories were interesting, and i think the characters were being developed well. I was wondering if anyone else watched the episodes and what they thought?
 
Yeah I bought the season 1 box set but was disappointed. OK its was far...far far better than that abortion known as Galactica 80 (whoever came up with that effort should be shot! - flying motorbikes and "superscouts" for cryin out lound!).

Wtaching the original Galactica remined me of how good it seemed at the time and how dated it is now - an SF show firmly stuck in the 80's with mock disco music, Dynasty style "big hair" etc.

Plus - and this I now hate - the bad science. On more than one occasion, it was clearly stated that the Galactica would have to go to lightspeed which it had not done for a while (see Living Legend, An Experiment in Terror and The Hand of God). So, if the Galactica and the "rag tag fleet" are plodding along at sub light speed, how in hell was the fleet able to leave their native galaxy and travel across to a new one? It was made clear that they had done this.

Now, at Warp 9.95 it would take USS Voyager 70 years to cross about 1/3 of our Galaxy...and Galactica goes between galaxies at sublight in a few weeks....

Now, have you seen the NEW Galactica mini-series! :p Despite my original reservations I found this to be a superb - and in many ways a superior - reinvention. Whilst I am still not sure about makingb Starbuck's character female, the notion that the bizzare names of the original - Apollo, Starbuck, Jolly, Boomer, Greenbean etc are call signs made a lot of sense.

I hear that they are proceeding with a full series . Yay! Hopefully we will see an SF resurgance (if only they would finish off Space Above and Beyond).

Interesting anecdote. Watch the miniseries for the scene where the President is given the news she has cancer. A lot of ships are flying overhead. One of them is the Serenity from Joss Weldon's series Firefly!
 
My dad is a real big fan of Battlestar, so much so that he has gotten me into it. Although I have seen very few episodes of the original series I still like it. They do have a second season, but it is apparently really bad, so much so that the real big fans of the origanal (my dad included) watched it, but act as though that never happened. Sci-Fi Channel has a new Battlestar series, call "reimaging" of the original, that is good, although quite a bit different than the original.

Currently there are only two, two hour long episodes of the "reimaging" I think it has taken off into a series but I am not sure, anyone have and more info on this?

Athena was hot. Starbuck should have stayed with her instead of seeing more of that prostitute turned medical technician Cassiopea.

I was watching the premere yesterday with commentary, and it was either Richard Hatch (Apollo), or Herbert Jefferson (Boomer), who said that the producers of the show didn't think Maren was that good of an actress and they were going to cut her from the show.

I haven't seen the new Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi yet. I have only seen some articles and pictures. Are all the Cylon's humanlike? I saw this picture of a blonde in a red dress that was supposed to be a Cylon. She didn't look quite as menacing as a shiny armored robot with a moving red light for an eye.
 
The "modern" Cylons in the new BSG series appear human (and there are apparently only six or so different versions, there were a whole bunch of them and their "duplicates" at the end of the miniseries). The Cylons we've come to know and love are still around in the new series. They were the main guys back during the war (part of the new series' backstory). The new series have newer, more streamlined soldiers that look very menacing, as well as droid starfighters that have the cool eye effect.
 
Battlestar Galactica is the biggest cheesiest sci fi series I have ever seen! And that's why I love it so much. I love the stinky cheesy nature of the whole thing. Since I've been watching the episodes on DVD I've noticed that Centons and Microns tend to drift as to their actual length, I've seen Microns used as seconds and closed to minutes and Centons used from minutes to hours. Still it's just a fun chunk of nostalgia.
Haven't seen the new miniseries though, anyone know if it's out on DVD? I don't have SciFi.

Yes some of it is pretty cheesy. The space suits in "Fire in Space", the episode where the Galactica is rammed by a couple of Cylon ships are horrible looking. And you can see the wires holding the actors up over the hull of the Galactica.

I also think the turbo button on the Viper's control stick is pretty funny, it makes me think of a nintendo game.

My favorite scenes are where Starbuck gets himself in trouble with Athena and Cassiopea. There is a scene like that in the premere where everyone is on the planet with the bug people and the Casino/resort. Starbuck is gambling and first Cassiopea and then Athena show up.

The one that really sticks out in my mind though is where Starbuck has a room reserved on the luxury ship in the fleet and was originally supposed to go with Athena, but she had to work. So Starbuck takes Cassiopea. When she leaves starbuck alone for a few moments, Athena shows up having gotten out of working her shift. Starbuck quickly gets another room and ends up getting another room for him and Athena and then ends up running back and forth between the two women. He almost pulls it off too, but Athena and Cassiopea end up running into each other when they are leaving the ship, and they see that they both got the same ring.
 
The original show was cool, the special effects might be dated, but for thier time they were excellant for a TV show. If you check out the websight it says that the station that premiered saw SW and said "make us one". The new mini-series was interesting, but I think it might have been better as a stand alone series.
Starbuck from the show was badass, one of the coolest ladies men ever on TV. He and Apollo are the best pilots on the Galactica but it always seemed like they were getting shot down.
 
Boomer was pretty cool in the original too. He was the quickest in drawing his laser pistol, and almost always seemed prepared for potential trouble. He was also a very reliable wingman.
 
The crappy, new Battlestar Galactica gets a green light for a series whilst contemporary sci-fi greats like Space: Above and Beyond and Firefly get canned prematurely??

Bah.

It just comes to show how open-minded SciFi channel is, compared to the totalitarian Fox networks.
